lilydoHello everyone,
I am currently planning the installation of a new kitchen using IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets and want to create as much storage space as possible, since our previous kitchen was often too small and impractical. My question is: What is the best way to install IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to make the most efficient use of the available space and maximize storage capacity? I am especially interested in tips on planning cabinet sizes and types, selecting internal fittings such as drawers, pull-outs, and organizers, as well as recommendations for practical combinations that I might have overlooked.
Additionally, I have concerns about whether there are effective solutions for tricky corners or custom measurements to efficiently utilize storage space in those areas. It would be great if you could share your personal experiences regarding the options available with Metod and what I should definitely pay attention to in order to end up with a functional kitchen offering as much space as possible. Thank you in advance!

Hello lilydo,
You bring up a very important topic, especially with Metod, where there is great flexibility in storage design. Generally, I recommend prioritizing the combination of tall cabinets with many drawers and pull-outs when planning. These provide better organization and more efficient use of space compared to simple shelves.
- Choose pull-outs with telescopic slides, as they operate smoothly and allow easy access.
- Internal organizers help keep cutlery, spices, and smaller items well sorted.
- Corner solutions like the "Magic Corner" or "Carousel" are good options to make the most of often difficult-to-use corner cabinet space.
If you have custom dimensions or awkward corners, it’s worth using special additional modules or panels that can be individually adapted.
Finally, I suggest using the IKEA kitchen planner before purchasing and experimenting with different storage configurations. With proper planning, Metod kitchen units can be used very space-efficiently and functionally.

Basically, I recommend focusing on a combination of tall cabinets with many drawers and pull-outs when planning your cupboards.I can only agree with that! At first, I also doubted whether all those pull-outs really make better use of the space compared to shelves, but for me, the easy accessibility makes a big difference. It saves a lot of time while cooking because you don’t have to dig around in deep cabinets.
What did worry me a bit was the installation. I was quite unsure about how to align everything properly, especially the drawer slides. In my opinion, a lot of patience helps here, and above all, carefully reading the assembly instructions. IKEA does put effort into this, but it shouldn’t be underestimated – I sometimes quietly panicked, thinking I might have made a mistake.
So if anyone like me is starting a project like this: take your time and rather use one screw too many than too few. When designing the storage space, I also found it helpful to measure the dimensions of your main kitchen utensils beforehand and plan the drawer height and depth accordingly.
Hello lilydo and all other readers,
I am currently assembling a Metod kitchen myself and would like to approach the topic of "ample storage space" in a more structured way:
1. Planning steps before assembly:
- Be clear about what you use and how often. Large pots, baking trays, small pots? Dinnerware?
- Choose different types of cabinets: tall cabinets for pantry items, base cabinets for dishes and appliances, wall cabinets for rarely used items.
2. Interior fittings:
- Classic drawer slides with soft-close systems are invaluable.
- Internal pull-outs help keep things organized, for example for plates or pans.
- Extra inserts (e.g., cutlery trays, spice racks) create a practical system.
3. Special solutions for corners:
- Le Mans swivel pull-outs or magic corners are perfect if you otherwise have dead corners.
4. Avoiding common mistakes:
- Measuring is crucial: also for panels, so you don’t end up with gaps or overly tight spaces.
- Don’t tighten screws too firmly at the start, so everything remains adjustable.
Finally: you can also experiment with plug connections and assembly kits to make the furniture more flexible or easier to expand later.
I hope this provides a good overview and helps with a structured assembly!

How can I best assemble IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets to make optimal use of the available space and create as much storage as possible?I believe the general approach is correct: it’s not just about the "assembly" itself, but especially about the planning. IKEA Metod cabinets are very modular, but to maximize storage, you need a critical look at your individual needs rather than relying on generic solutions.
From an analytical perspective, it’s worth considering the space in three dimensions: height, depth, and width are all equally important. Despite the temptation to choose many tall cabinets, this can quickly make the room feel cramped or disrupt the kitchen work triangle.
I am also skeptical about the overlap between catalog solutions and actual storage needs, since even optimized drawers take up space because of their hardware and framing.
My advice: before deciding on a combination of drawers and pull-outs, measure your main kitchen utensils in length, width, and height, and create a scale planning grid (for example, on millimeter paper).
This way, you ensure you don’t waste space on hardware or clearance areas that could lead to poor investments.
Regarding the assembly itself: the importance of stability is often underestimated. Cabinet frames must be perfectly plumb. If this isn’t achieved, the storage won’t work as well as expected.
