Hello everyone, I am currently planning to modify an Ikea Metod kitchen to make it accessible for people with limited mobility. Specifically, I am interested in how to adjust the base cabinets and work surfaces so that wheelchair users can comfortably roll underneath, and what installation options are available to set the furniture elements at the appropriate height. I would also like to know if there are any special add-ons or tips to make the cabinets easier to use, such as handle choices or pull-out systems. Has anyone had experience or can offer concrete advice on how to mount Metod kitchen furniture safely and functionally with accessibility in mind? Thanks in advance!

For implementing barrier-free Metod kitchens, I recommend initially installing the base cabinets at a minimum height of 68-70 cm (27-28 inches) without a plinth, as this is important for wheelchair users to comfortably access the worktop from underneath. Ikea offers individual legs that allow you to raise the cabinets.

The countertop at the working area should also be set to this height and ideally extend slightly to ensure knee clearance.

For operation, handle strips or handleless fronts with a tip-on function are especially suitable, as they are easier to open than traditional handles. Soft-close drawer systems are also recommended; here, the Metod internal drawer system with full extension is advisable.

It is also important to adjust the fronts as needed with stronger hinges to ensure durability and proper support.

I would recommend adjustable-height legs and leaving open space for the feet. Install drawers with soft-close mechanisms, as they are easier to use. Handles are best mounted on the outside, not recessed.

The following points are crucial for making an Ikea Metod kitchen accessible:

- Raising the base cabinets using height-adjustable feet (minimum clear height of 68 cm (27 inches) under the countertop)
- Ideally, the countertop at the seating position should have an overhang of about 30 cm (12 inches)
- Avoiding traditional kickboards or replacing them with removable plinths to increase legroom
- Using pull-outs with full extension and soft-close features to improve accessibility
- Choosing handle options such as grip rails or electric openers to enhance usability

It is also important to check whether any load-bearing structural elements can be modified without compromising stability. Additional braces or reinforcements are recommended if necessary.

Push-to-open handles or handleless fronts with push-to-open mechanisms are particularly well suited for operation, as they are easier to open than traditional handles.

I can confirm this. I ordered a Metod kitchen with push-to-open for my father because he has severe arthritis. It was a real relief, especially around the stove and sink. It was also important that the countertop was slightly lower so he could work comfortably over it.

I would recommend carefully assessing the user’s mobility before installation to make the right adjustments instead of relying solely on standard dimensions. This makes a big difference in everyday life.

To be more specific: For installation, it is advisable to partially remove or modify the back panels of the base cabinets to provide enough clearance for wheelchair footrests. Screws and fasteners then need to be carefully planned and repositioned to maintain stability.

Additionally, the choice of countertop material is crucial. Materials that do not deform or crack are preferable. A durable countertop with rounded edges helps prevent injuries and makes cleaning easier.

Another tip: integrating electric push-to-open mechanisms can further improve usability but will increase costs.
