Hello everyone, I am currently planning to remodel my kitchen and have chosen IKEA Metod cabinets with sliding doors to create a modern look while saving space. My question is: How can I properly and efficiently install IKEA Metod cabinets with sliding doors for modern kitchens? I have already assembled the standard Metod cabinets, but the sliding door system presents bigger challenges. I am especially interested in how to best attach the running rails, what special considerations there are for alignment, and if there are any tips for integrating them into a continuous kitchen run. Perhaps there are also recommendations for the appropriate sliding door hardware and how to adjust it so the doors operate smoothly and quietly. I look forward to your experiences, step-by-step instructions, and practical advice—including common mistakes to avoid.

Hello Lausan,

to approach the topic from the basics: IKEA Metod is a system based on precise measurements and modular design. The Metod cabinets are designed to accommodate various types of fronts and fittings.

For sliding doors, it is especially important to ensure that the weight of the doors is not too heavy and that the tracks and rollers are rated for the specific door weight. IKEA offers different systems here, so it is important that you carefully check which sliding door system you have.

For installation, I recommend following the IKEA instructions very closely, but also breaking the steps down clearly: 1. Secure the cabinet, 2. Attach the rollers to the door, 3. Level and fix the tracks horizontally, 4. Hang the door, 5. Make fine adjustments.

Very important: After installation, be sure to test the rollers and adjust if necessary so the doors do not stick or wobble. Especially in everyday kitchen use, the system should operate with minimal vibration and be durable.

Have you already secured the cabinets in their final position? Because only then should you drill and install the sliding tracks to ensure a perfect fit.

This is a point that is often overlooked. I frequently see that users attach the tracks too early during installation, before the cabinets are properly aligned—resulting in doors that later stick or run unevenly.

Additionally, I want to add that the flooring and the horizontal alignment of the entire kitchen front play an important role. If the cabinets are installed with only minimal tolerance, problems with the sliding door are often assumed, while the real cause might be an uneven floor or tilt.

Lausan, make sure to check with a long spirit level or even a laser level to confirm that the entire kitchen is aligned at the same height. Otherwise, your sliding doors may not glide smoothly together later on. It might help to use small shims under the cabinet feet to compensate for any unevenness.

Hello Lausan and all other friends of modern kitchens!

I’m usually a laid-back person, but IKEA Metod cabinets with sliding doors can quickly become complicated – no doubt about it. In my last project, I realized that a bit of calmness doesn’t hurt, even though it can be frustrating when the doors don’t glide smoothly right away.

As several people here have already said, perfect alignment is the key. But make sure to take some breaks while adjusting the doors – sometimes it helps to step back for a moment and then come back with fresh eyes.

Did you know that some people install small model-building ball bearings in the tracks to make the sliding even smoother? Maybe a bit over the top, but it shows how diverse the approaches can be.

Good luck, and remember: every kitchen gets better with a little patience and a sense of humor!
