Hello everyone, I am planning to assemble my kitchen myself using Ikea Metod cabinets and then install matching countertops. I am interested in the correct installation of the cabinets – including leveling, securing them to the wall, and connecting the individual units – as well as the proper cutting and fixing of the countertops to ensure a stable and durable surface. Could someone with personal experience explain in detail which steps are especially important, what to consider regarding tool selection and materials, and which common mistakes to avoid? Practical tips, for example on preparing the substrate or handling the Metod components, would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Make sure the wall is level—uneven surfaces must be corrected beforehand, otherwise the stability will be compromised. Use a spirit level and a plumb line to align the cabinets accurately on the wall. Make sure to use Ikea’s fastening materials or appropriately approved anchors and screws suited to your wall type (e.g., concrete, drywall).
For connecting the modules to each other, it is recommended to correctly use the supplied clips and screws to prevent the cabinets from shifting. There should be no large gaps between the cabinets; otherwise, the countertop will not fit flush.
When cutting the countertop, accurate measurements are essential. It is best to use a jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade to avoid splintering. Before final installation, place the countertop on the cabinets as a test and check the fit.
Important: After installing the countertop, the cut edges should be sealed to prevent moisture damage. Ikea offers suitable countertop fasteners for Metod that are easy to install and sufficiently strong.

Make sure to use fastening materials from Ikea or equivalent approved materials for plugs and screws, matched to your wall typeAbsolutely – otherwise it will start to become unstable and the kitchen won’t last long. 😜 I would also recommend sorting everything thoroughly before the actual assembly and laying the pieces out next to the wall, so the build goes faster later and you don’t have to keep searching for parts while screwing.
And hey, it’s even fun when you tackle it with a good playlist in the background! For the countertops, I suggest having them cut at the workshop if you’re not confident with sawing. But with some practice and a good saw blade, it’s really quite easy.
I’m adding a few steps that are often overlooked:
- Before starting installation, be sure to measure the wall and mark alignment lines; this will prevent problems when positioning the cabinet systems.
- Uneven floors can be easily compensated for using adjustable furniture feet designed for the Metod system—these adjustment options are available from Ikea, so make sure to use them!
- Connect the cabinets together first, then mount them on the wall as a unit. This prevents warping later on.
- When cutting the countertop, ensure clean, straight cuts; use masking tape along the cut line to minimize chipping.
- Let the countertop dry completely before final fastening, especially if water was used during cutting.
Finally: Use the provided installation templates (if available), as they greatly simplify precise alignment and drilling for countertop attachments.
Overall: Good preparation and a systematic approach are the keys to success.

Can someone with personal experience explain in detail which steps are particularly important here?I can only confirm that—doing it yourself is always a great feeling, especially when everything fits perfectly! Make sure to follow Ikea’s assembly instructions and take your time with each step.
And very important: be careful when carrying the countertops, they are heavy and fragile. I got some helpers, which saved a lot of stress.
If you have questions about adjusting the doors or the connecting panel, feel free to ask. Good luck, you can do this!
