Hello everyone,

I am currently facing the task of assembling several Ikea Hemnes shelves and wanted to ask here for proven methods and tips. I am especially interested in how you approach ensuring the shelves are stable and level, particularly with the taller models. Are there specific tools that work best or tricks that make assembly significantly easier?

The manual describes all the steps, but sometimes I find it lacks guidance on the optimal order or what to pay special attention to when installing the back panel or the shelves. It would also be helpful to know whether you only attach the shelves to the wall or if connecting the individual units to each other is advisable.

I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I recommend strictly following the instructions when assembling the Hemnes shelves and initially tightening each screw only loosely. Once everything is assembled, you can then fully tighten all screws. A cordless drill makes the work much easier. Always attach the back panel last, as this ensures stability. Wall mounting is essential, especially for tall shelves.

That is a very important question, because with tall Hemnes shelves in particular, it is easy to notice if they are not standing straight or if they warp.

I recommend the following structured approach:

- Prepare your workspace: Assemble the shelves and side panels on a level surface.
- Gather tools: Phillips screwdriver, cordless drill with torque control, spirit level, and possibly a rubber mallet.
- Sort parts beforehand: Check all components for damage and organize screws and dowels according to the assembly steps.
- First assemble the side panels; loosely fix the shelves so you can make adjustments later.
- Attach the back panel last, usually with small nails or screws. This provides the necessary stability for the unit.
- After assembly, check the shelving unit with a spirit level. Minor misalignments can be corrected by gently adjusting the back panel.
- Always use wall mounts; Ikea usually includes appropriate screws and wall plugs.

It would also be interesting to know if you only fix the shelves to the wall or if connecting the individual units together makes sense.

If you place multiple shelving units side by side, it is advisable to connect them to each other so they stand more steadily as a single unit. Ikea usually provides connector fittings for this purpose. However, if you do not secure them to the wall, exercise caution—especially in homes with children or on uneven floors.

In summary: Work carefully, do not tighten screws fully at first, use a spirit level to check, attach the back panel as the final step, and always secure the unit to the wall.

If you like, I can also share tips on common mistakes during assembly.

I can only agree with this. Especially as someone who sometimes struggles during assembly, I find it very reassuring to install the back panel last because it still allows for adjustments.

At first, I felt like I couldn't work neatly without professional tools and was worried the shelf might be unstable. But with a bit of patience, it really works out. It’s also important not to rush and to take breaks if you feel unsure.

I can relate well to LALEO55’s questions – I would mainly say, don’t be afraid of making mistakes! If you notice a screw doesn’t fit properly, it’s better to double-check the instructions and the parts before forcing it.

And here’s a more personal tip: sometimes having a second pair of hands helps a lot, because building together is more fun and more motivating. Especially for the Hemnes shelves, which are demanding due to their weight and size, this adds a sense of security.

If anyone has practical tips on making the assembly process more comfortable, I’d be interested as well – the back panels have always been a bit of a challenge for me.
