Hello everyone, I hope someone here can help me with a specific question. I recently bought an Ikea Hemnes bed and want to assemble it not only quickly but also securely. My goal is to follow the instructions as best as possible, but I’m uncertain about some steps, especially when it comes to connecting the side panels with the headboard and footboard. I’ve heard that you shouldn’t just tighten all the screws right away, but that there is a certain sequence or technique to ensure the bed is stable and not wobbly in the long run. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to assemble the Hemnes bed quickly yet solidly? Maybe also advice on tools or helpers that are particularly useful? Thanks in advance!

First, loosely assemble all wooden parts without fully tightening any screws. Then, tighten all connections step by step to avoid any tension or warping. You will need a screwdriver with a Phillips bit.

Let me add: It is important to align the edges carefully and avoid fully tightening the screws too early. This is really crucial for the stability of wooden beds like Hemnes. A cordless screwdriver with torque control can help prevent over-tightening the screws. When connecting the side panels to the headboard and footboard, make sure everything fits flush and aligns properly. If the bed wobbles afterwards, it is usually due to incorrect assembly like this.

Exactly, this avoids unnecessary disassembly. I also recommend attaching the slat supports first, then the side panels. This way, everything fits together neatly.

Thank you for the advice so far. To revisit this: the recommendation to roughly assemble everything first makes sense to avoid warping. However, I wonder if there is a specific order for tightening the screws—where is it best to start? For example, should I begin at the corners, the center, or the edges? It would also be helpful to know whether a cordless drill is the best choice in terms of torque, or if it’s better to do everything manually to avoid over-tightening and damaging the parts. I have little experience with furniture assembly and want to do as much as possible correctly, especially since the Hemnes is not exactly cheap and hopefully lasts a long time.

It is advisable to start with the corners, as these are usually the main load-bearing points. Then, tighten the screws evenly toward the center, gradually and not too tightly at once. This helps distribute the tension.

Regarding the cordless drill: a torque limiter is important to avoid over-tightening the screws. Especially with pre-assembled furniture, I recommend using the cordless drill as assistance, but set it to a low torque setting and retighten more often rather than tightening too much at once. This protects both the screws and the wood.
