Good morning everyone, I’m facing the challenge of assembling an IKEA Brimnes piece of furniture entirely on my own and wanted to ask here in the forum for the best tips, tricks, and possibly personal experiences. Specifically, I’m looking at how to assemble the Brimnes wardrobe or the sideboard — that is, rather large furniture items with multiple parts and complex instructions — as efficiently and safely as possible without any help. How do you approach this when you’re working alone? Do simple tools or modular methods help? Are there any particularly tricky steps where people tend to get stuck or where it’s better to handle things differently than the manual suggests? I would appreciate detailed advice and motivating hints because I don’t want to underestimate the assembly and prefer to tackle it in a structured way from the start.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide for assembling the Brimnes wardrobe on your own:

1. Preparation: Lay out all parts neatly on the floor, preferably in a large room – remove the drawers for better organization.

2. Tools: Crosshead screwdriver, cordless drill (with low torque setting), hammer (for dowels).

3. Assemble the carcass: It’s best to start with the side panels, then attach the bottom and top.

4. Securing: If possible, use clamps for tricky areas that require both hands.

5. Install hinges: Take your time here, check positions carefully and mark them with a pencil.

6. Mount the doors: Attach them one by one and adjust precisely using the adjustment screws.

7. Assemble the drawers: Be patient, as the drawer slides require accurate alignment.

Finally: Tighten all screws securely and check stability.

A small tip: The instructions in the IKEA app or printed booklet may sometimes differ slightly. Make sure to follow the instructions found inside the box exactly.

Good luck!

When assembling on your own, it helps to place the large component on a stable surface. Loosely tighten the screws with a cordless drill first, and fully secure them only at the end. When hanging the doors, pay attention to the hinge position to avoid them sticking later. And: stay calm.

Great to see so many people sharing tips here! I would add that when building alone, it’s especially important to pay attention to your posture. Avoid twisting or overstretching yourself while screwing, as this will make it hard to keep going for a long time.

A small trick: temporarily tape all parts that belong together before assembling—that makes handling much easier.

And of course, don’t forget to take breaks! With good music, the assembly process goes a lot smoother.

Assembling Brimnes alone is a test of patience with built-in frustration.

I can relate to that, but I don’t see it quite so pessimistically. With the right preparation and mindset, it actually goes better than you might expect. Keep in mind that IKEA furniture is designed for everyone.

What I also recommend: lift heavy parts with your back close to the body and avoid lifting disproportionally. If you’re really having trouble aligning the door, small shims can help keep it in place while you attach the hinges.

Keep going!

If you are unsure whether a step is helpful, you can also work with a dry fit beforehand, meaning loosely assembling parts and testing them before tightening all the screws. This helps avoid having to dismantle later.

I want to reinforce what others have said: the fine adjustments for doors and drawers are crucial. Use a spirit level to ensure everything is perfectly horizontal and aligned.

Good luck, the effort is definitely worth it!
