Hello everyone,

I am currently facing a somewhat unusual challenge: I bought an IKEA Besta piece of furniture, but unfortunately, the assembly instructions are missing. Since I cannot simply order a replacement manual and I don’t want to assemble the furniture incorrectly, I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with putting together an IKEA Besta shelving unit without the original assembly guide?

I’m especially interested in tips on how to properly sort the individual components, the recommended order for assembly, and if there are common pitfalls I should definitely avoid. If anyone has improvised and assembled these shelves on their own, I would be very grateful for a step-by-step description or general advice.

Thank you very much for your help!

Hello Mauabidin,

I can completely understand how frustrating it can be to assemble a piece of furniture like the Besta without instructions. I had a similar experience a few years ago when I had to put together a wardrobe without any guide. What helped me back then was first sorting all the parts clearly – that creates transparency.

It’s best to stack similar panels sorted by size and drill holes. Arranging screws and dowels in small bowls also helps a lot to avoid overlooking anything.

Additionally, it’s worth carefully checking which components belong together before assembly to understand the order. A general rule of thumb for IKEA furniture is to assemble the side panels first, then the shelves, and finally the back panel, if there is one.

Don’t worry if a step doesn’t seem to fit—there’s often another possible position for a part. Good luck!

Hi Mauabidin,

I find your topic interesting and can completely understand that you want to assemble the furniture without instructions. 😊

A few common pitfalls come to mind, which I’d like to share with a wink:

- Pay attention to the orientation of the panels when screwing them together! Sometimes the holes are hidden, and it’s easy to swap the sides – which makes the shelf crooked.
- Don’t overtighten the screws! If they’re too tight, the material can crack.
- Don’t forget to properly align and firmly nail the back panel; this gives the unit solid stability.

If you’re really not comfortable with the assembly, my tip is to photograph all the parts first – this can help if you need to take a break halfway through and want to keep track later.

Good luck, you can do it! 😉

Hello Mauabidin,

I would like to offer you a structured approach to assembling your Besta cabinet even without the manual.

1. Preparation:
- Lay out all the parts and sort them by type and size (side panels, shelves, back panels, doors, screws, dowels).
- Check that all fasteners are present (especially dowels and screws for the corner joints).

2. Assembly of side panels and shelves:
- Start with the side panels and insert the shelf elements. Usually, the shelves are securely screwed and fixed with dowels in the pre-drilled holes.
- Make sure that the holes for the back panel remain unobstructed.

3. Mount the back panel:
- The back panel is usually attached last with nails. It provides stability to the furniture.

4. Doors and drawers:
- Next come the doors and drawer fronts. Pay special attention to adjusting the hinges, as this will make closing easier.

Common mistakes:
- Confusing the side panels, as they often differ slightly in the drilling pattern.
- Incorrectly inserted dowels can cause the parts not to fit precisely.

If you are unsure about any of the steps, feel free to reach out again and I will help you specifically.

My tip for assembling Besta without instructions:

- Sort all parts according to the diagrams, which are often shown on the packaging.
- Start with the side panels and begin inserting and screwing in the shelves.
- Attach the back panel last, as it stabilizes the furniture.
- Do not tighten the screws too much.

This method always works for me.
