Hello everyone, I am currently planning to equip my Ikea Besta cabinet with LED design lighting and would like to know which steps are recommended to achieve the most even and clean result. I am looking for tips on installing the LED strips, power supply, and whether there are specific mounting methods that have proven effective. I am also interested in common mistakes to avoid. Does anyone have practical experience or can offer good lighting recommendations specifically suited for the Besta modules? Thanks in advance!

Hello ixpalu, this is a great project! Basically, I recommend first deciding whether you want to use rigid LED strips or flexible ones. Flexible LED strips often fit better with Ikea Besta units because they can easily bend around corners and edges. Power supply is important: use a power adapter with sufficient capacity to avoid voltage drops. Managing the circuits with appropriate connectors or even remote controls can make a big difference. For installation itself, I would always recommend double-sided tape or – even better – special clips that hold the strip securely in place. You should definitely avoid bending the strips at edges, as this can damage the LEDs. If the lighting should be indirect, using diffusers (frosted glass profiles) helps create an even light.

LED strips work best at 12V. Installation: attach the strips to the back of the shelf, hide the power supply inside the cabinet, and arrange the cables neatly. Connectors make handling easier.

As a supplement: First, assemble the Ikea Besta cabinet completely and precisely determine where the light sources should be placed. The optimal installation of the LEDs is along the inner edges or underneath the shelves to create indirect lighting. For the power supply, the power adapter should be planned with at least a 20% reserve over the total power consumption of the installed LED strips to avoid overheating and voltage drops. If possible, use 3528 or 2835 LED strips with bright and even light distribution, preferably dimmable. Cable management is essential: secure cables on the back with Velcro straps or cable channels whenever possible. A frequently overlooked point is using terminal connectors with sufficient current rating to ensure long-term durability. Protection via a suitable switch or dimmer completes the setup. These aspects ensure a professional appearance and durability.

Hey, I completely understand your wish – LEDs on furniture really make a difference, but I also had some difficulties at the beginning. Cable management can be quite frustrating if you're too relaxed about it, because the whole setup can quickly look messy or cause problems when opening doors. I mounted my LED strips with self-adhesive tape, but it didn't hold very well over the months, so I can only recommend securing the strips additionally with small clips or even hot glue if that's allowed. And be careful not to bend the cables too sharply, as they can break easily. What also helped me was making a sketch beforehand, showing where everything will be installed and how the power should flow. This provides some planning security and saves a lot of fiddling later on.

Mount the LED strips using 3M double-sided tape and secure the corners with suitable clips. Place the power supply at the bottom of the cabinet and hide the cables using cable ducts. Pay attention to polarity, otherwise the LEDs will not light up.
