Hello everyone, I want to assemble the Billy bookcase from IKEA, but I’m not allowed to drill holes in my apartment. My question is: How can I securely and firmly set up and fix the Billy bookcase to the wall without leaving any drill holes? I’m especially interested in tips on alternatives like adhesive mounts, tension rods, or other practical methods that won’t damage the wall. Has anyone had experience with these kinds of solutions and can explain the best way to do this? Thanks in advance for any detailed help!
Great question, this issue affects many people who are not allowed to drill! 🙂 I have had very good experiences with so-called tension bars – these are clamped between the ceiling and the cabinet and hold the Billy shelf very securely. It is important that the ceiling is strong enough and that the bars are installed properly.
If you have curtain rods or tension rods, you can also use these as a top support and secure them to the shelf with brackets – sometimes this holds better than adhesive. Good luck, it’s great when you can manage something without drilling holes!!! :-)

The most important requirement for assembling a Billy-style shelf without drilling is stable surface pressure. The following methods are recommended:
1. Tension rods (also called tension strips, which connect the floor and ceiling)
2. Special adhesive or mounting putty that is strong and can be removed without residue
3. Attachment with hook-and-loop tape that has high adhesive strength
It is essential to know the maximum load capacity of the materials used, as the shelf may otherwise tip over or slip. Important: No solution is as secure as drilling and using wall plugs, but for light loads, tension or adhesive options work quite well.
This is technically correct, although the installation must be done precisely. A ceiling height of 2.30 to 2.50 m (7 ft 7 in to 8 ft 2 in) is ideal to ensure enough tension.
Larger or more heavily loaded shelves are always more challenging, so please always pay close attention to the weight.

I think this whole "no drilling" approach is often just unnecessary effort. Securing a Billy cabinet to the wall to prevent falls is not a trivial matter.
If you really don’t want to make any holes, you might want to consider other types of furniture or at least accept that safety will be compromised. Tension rods or adhesives are more or less temporary solutions and can cause problems in the long run. I am skeptical about securing a heavy cabinet only by these means.

Hey everyone :-)! Here’s what I did: I clamped tension rods to the ceiling (no drilling, no hassle) and placed the Billy bookshelf on top. Important: put non-slip mats on the shelf boards to prevent anything from sliding.
That’s absolutely right – 2.45 m (8 ft) works perfectly for me! And clamping strips are a really clever trick.
I decided against using glue because I was worried about residue on the wall. Good luck to you all, it will definitely work! 😉
