Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to create a walk-in closet solution using several Ikea PAX wardrobes in my bedroom. I want to assemble the classic PAX series in a way that forms a walk-in closet, meaning multiple wardrobes placed side by side, possibly with a corner unit.

Specifically, I’m interested in:
- What is the best way to securely connect the modules together?
- Are there any special connectors or accessories from Ikea or third-party providers that help build this kind of setup effectively?
- What should I pay attention to when installing, especially regarding alignment, anchoring to the wall, and door handling to ensure everything operates smoothly afterward?

I have already purchased the PAX frame sets (each 100 x 60 x 236 cm (39 x 24 x 93 inches)) along with some shelving units and drawers. I have experience assembling furniture, but I haven’t built a walk-in closet configuration before.

I would greatly appreciate any tips or even detailed instructions!

As a general recommendation, I suggest connecting the PAX wardrobes using the original Ikea connectors included in the delivery. Since a walk-in setup involves several wardrobes placed side by side, it is important to use at least two connectors per adjacent wardrobe pair to ensure stability.

Additionally, the entire construction should be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping. Use the supplied wall brackets for this and make sure the surface is solid (e.g., a solid wall).

Important:
- Check the floor for levelness before installation.
- Use a spirit level and square for correct alignment.
- Make sure the doors do not rub or catch after assembly.

I have no experience with third-party accessories, but Ikea itself offers the appropriate fittings.

Hello rory56,

I would like to offer a simple step-by-step guide to help you assemble your walk-in PAX solution as smoothly as possible:

1. Preparation:
- Measure the room and determine how many PAX carcasses are needed, including corners or transitions.
- Order corner connectors if you need 90° angles (these are usually not included as standard with PAX).

2. Initial assembly:
- Assemble each carcass individually at first, but do not fully attach the back panels yet.

3. Connection:
- Place the carcasses side by side and connect them using the supplied connectors.
- For corners, use special corner brackets to keep the structure stable.

4. Wall mounting:
- Secure the entire unit to the wall using corner brackets and wall fixings.

5. Doors and interior fittings:
- Hang the doors and adjust the hinges as needed.
- Install interior fittings (shelves, clothes rails, drawers) last.

Common mistakes:
- An uneven floor or missing wall fixings can lead to instability.
- Doors might stick due to improper alignment of the carcasses.

I hope this gives you a clear overview!

Make sure to connect the cabinets to each other at least twice; otherwise, they will be unstable. Securing them to the wall is essential to prevent the risk of tipping over. For corners, you will need angle brackets, which Ikea does not provide directly, so you often have to get them from a hardware store.

Interesting point, but isn’t that also one of the weaknesses of the PAX system? The frame construction and corner solutions seem more well-designed with other manufacturers.

The suitable fittings are only available for simple side-by-side cabinets, but not for more complex walk-in designs with corners, except for makeshift solutions.

You might want to consider whether you can make the whole setup more stable with some DIY skills than following the instructions alone, for example by adding extra wooden strips or screw connections.

It’s not an Apple-like plug-and-play solution, but it’s essential for stability if you use the PAX line as a walk-in closet.

Hello rory56,

Your project sounds exciting, but I want to point out that careful planning is crucial, especially for walk-in PAX wardrobe solutions.

Please pay attention to the following:
- Check the floor condition (level and load-bearing capacity)
- Assess the wall material on site (concrete or drywall) to choose suitable anchors
- Verify spacing to ensure doors open smoothly
- Stability measures: Use concealed connectors, additional brackets, and base trims to reinforce the structure
- For corners: Additional reinforcements with adapter plates or custom-made connections are helpful since PAX does not offer a specific standard for corner assemblies

A general tip: Work in smaller sections and then connect the modules. This makes fine adjustments easier.
