Hello everyone,

I am considering upgrading the appearance of my IKEA BESTÅ fronts using decorative films or paint. Since the fronts are usually coated with melamine or similar surfaces, I wonder: What is the best way to apply decorative films or paint without damaging the material or having the new surface peel off quickly? Are there any special preparation steps that should be taken? How well do films adhere to these smooth fronts, and which types of paint work best for a durable and even finish? I would appreciate any practical tips, experiences, and advice to achieve a professional look and avoid problems later on.

Thank you in advance!

Without surface finishing, films or paints can peel off quickly

I completely agree. I have treated wood and plastic surfaces based on this principle myself. I noticed that in addition to the primer, the post-treatment plays a crucial role. For example, special clear coats after applying the film help make the surface more durable.

Furthermore, I recommend using very high-quality films with air-release technology – these are easier to apply without bubbles and adhere better.

Regarding paint: In my experience, a satin-matte, water-based acrylic paint is ideal because it remains resistant and does not lose its gloss or chip as quickly.

For high durability, it is better to use professional-grade films or consider a combination of film plus a protective clear coat.
