ᐅ How can I align IKEA BESTA doors so they stay perfectly straight over time?

juken52Hello everyone,
I recently installed the doors on my IKEA Besta cabinet, but despite multiple adjustments, they gradually slip out of perfect alignment over time and no longer hang straight. I am interested in how to properly align BESTA doors so that they remain straight permanently, without tilting due to gravity, material flexibility, or minor installation tolerances.
I have already tried readjusting the hinges several times while the cabinet is assembled, but after a few weeks, the door is slightly warped again or rubs against the cabinet frame. The hinges do have fine adjustment options.
Does anyone have tips or experience on the most effective method to ensure the doors stay straight in the long term? Would additional measures be helpful, such as reinforcements or special screws? Or is the issue more likely related to the cabinet frame or the wall?
Thank you very much for any helpful advice!

I’m interested in how exactly BESTA doors can be aligned so that they remain perfectly straight over time, without sagging or becoming misaligned due to gravity, material flexibility, or slight installation tolerances.I’m very familiar with this issue, and it’s really frustrating when doors start to sag or stick after a while. What helped me was fully screwing in the hinges first and then using a spirit level to align the door very precisely before fixing it in place permanently.
At the same time, I made sure that the cabinet frame was set up completely straight and level – sometimes even a slightly uneven base surface can cause the entire piece to become crooked over time.
I wish you the best of luck anyway; working with BESTA doors definitely requires patience!
For the permanent alignment of BESTA doors, there is a structured procedure:
- Check the carcass: It is important that the BESTA carcass itself is absolutely straight and stable. Check for unevenness using a spirit level and adjust the leveling feet if necessary.
- Mount the hinges correctly: The original Liebherr hinges feature a 3D fine adjustment (horizontal, vertical, depth). This must be done gradually.
- Install the doors: First hang the doors loosely, align them roughly, and then carefully tighten the hinge screws.
- Fine-tune: After the initial fixed installation, open and close the doors several times to allow the material to settle slightly. Then tighten the screws as needed for precise adjustment.
- Check for strain: Make sure that none of the doors are permanently pressed against other furniture or walls. Stress caused by gravity can deform the material and hinges.
Additional measures (reinforcements, etc.) are usually not necessary if the carcass is level and the hinges are properly adjusted.
A common mistake is over-tightening the doors with too much force and not checking the hinges within their adjustment range.
I hope this checklist helps achieve a clean and lasting alignment.

What an exciting topic, since proper alignment really makes a difference! 😃
I find adjusting the hinges is truly an art, and this is where the magic happens.
The best way to do it is:
- Loosen the door slightly and check its position with a spirit level.
- Use the lateral adjustment on the hinges to compensate for any slight tilt.
- Important: Always loosen the screws a little before making any new adjustments.
I’ve noticed that if you take your time and repeat the process several times, the doors stay stable for a long time.
So keep at it—your doors will thank you! 😊

Regarding the permanent alignment of IKEA BESTÅ doors:
The issue often stems from the combination of the door material properties (medium-density fiberboard) and the load from the door’s own weight. During installation, the following points must be carefully observed:
- Use the original hinges with 3D adjustment
- Check the squareness of the cabinet using a spirit level
- After the initial installation and adjustment, a follow-up check after about 1–2 weeks is advisable, as the material may slightly settle due to moisture and weight
- The hinge clearance should be sufficient to compensate for any warping; otherwise, the hinges may need to be replaced
Additional reinforcements on the doors are not necessary provided the installation instructions are strictly followed.
Proper alignment and regular readjustment are key to maintaining straight doors over time.

Adjusting the door:
- Mark the hinges
- Hang the doors loosely
- Use a spirit level
- Loosen the screws slightly
- Use the 3D adjustment
- Tighten the screws
- Check again after a few days
If doors remain permanently misaligned, it is usually due to carcass instability or incorrect installation.
