KanobiHello everyone, I have a question that I hope someone with experience can answer: How can I adjust Ikea Metod kitchen doors when they don’t close properly? Specifically, some doors start to stick in certain areas or don’t sit flush against the frame due to incorrect alignment. I have already tried readjusting the hinges, but that only helped partially. Is there a way to slightly reshape or modify the door to improve the fit? I suspect that minor warping or tension in the material might be the cause and wanted to ask here for any proven methods. Thanks in advance for any tips!

Here are some structured tips on adjusting and improving the fit of Metod doors:
- First, you should carefully check whether the issue is caused by the hinges or the door itself. Often, it’s due to incorrect adjustment.
- The Ikea Metod hinges can be adjusted along three axes: up/down, left/right, and depth. Take a close look at the screws; usually, a small correction is enough.
- If that isn’t sufficient, lightly sanding the edges that are sticking can help, but remove only a small amount of material.
- Another option is to take the door off its hinges and store it under slight tension overnight. This can sometimes relieve stress in wood or MDF doors.
- Important: Always use fine-grit sandpaper and smooth the finish afterwards to prevent moisture from penetrating.
I hope this helps as a guide. Ikea doors are sturdy, so avoid making too aggressive modifications.

An important note: Often, small inaccuracies during the installation of the cabinet body cause the doors not to close properly. Before modifying the door, it is advisable to use a spirit level to precisely align the cabinet and, if necessary, place small shims behind the hinges. Afterwards, you can fine-tune the hinges. Breaking out or deforming doors should always be the last step, as it can compromise stability.

In which direction and with what level of effort? I want to avoid causing any damage. The doors are made of MDF with a melamine coating.

When I do this, I remove the door from its hinges and place two sturdy strips parallel on the floor. Then I lay the door flat on the strips so that the areas that are binding are gently pressed against the surface—just a light counterpressure, no force. For example, if the door is sticking on the right side, you can use a weight or gentle pressure to position the door so that this area is pulled in the direction where the fit should improve.
Never apply too much pressure—just leave it like this for several hours or overnight. MDF tends to relax slightly under continuous load. Afterward, check carefully and readjust the hinges if necessary.
You can repeat the process if needed. It’s important that the melamine coating is not damaged.
