ᐅ How can Ikea PAX drawers be retrofitted with soft-close mechanisms?

Hello everyone, I have an Ikea PAX wardrobe system with some existing drawers that unfortunately do not have soft-close functionality. I would like to retrofit this feature to allow for smoother and quieter closing. Since I have no experience retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on Ikea PAX drawers, I would like to know:

What options are available to add soft-close functionality to the existing drawers of the PAX system?
- Are there specific retrofit kits from Ikea or third-party suppliers for PAX?
- How complex is the installation, and is it necessary to modify the drawer slides or drawer construction?
- Are there particular models or manufacturers that are known to be compatible?

I would appreciate any personal experiences, installation tips, or warnings about potential issues!

Retrofitting soft-close functionality works best with a complete replacement of the drawer slides. Retrofit dampers are often fiddly and less durable.

I agree with you, but if you only have two or three drawers that aren’t used frequently, a simple retrofit damper can also be a nice, affordable solution. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for the larger drawers in the bedroom. 😊

I replaced the original running rails in my Pax system with ones that have an integrated soft-close function from Blum.

Installation is simple: remove the old ones, install the new ones, everything fits perfectly. Of course, it costs a bit, but it’s definitely worth it.

If you use retrofit kits, be sure to measure the exact drawer dimensions beforehand. There are different versions for varying load capacities and sizes.

Thank you for the helpful tip. I have now taken precise measurements of the drawers. These are Metabox drawers, not undermount slides.

Does anyone have experience with specific third-party soft-close retrofit kits for Metabox? I’m uncertain whether you only need to add the dampers or if the entire slide has to be replaced.

I personally bought a retrofit kit that includes only dampers for the Metabox drawer. No need to replace the slides, just clip the dampers into certain spots. It was quick and has worked great so far. If you pay attention to quality, this is a practical solution. Good luck!
