Hello everyone,

I am planning to repaint my Ikea Brimnes bedroom furniture set in multiple colors, but I’m unsure about the best way to achieve a clean and durable result. Specifically, I want to combine two or more colors on the fronts and carcasses—for example, having the drawers a different color than the doors, or even color blocks within a single door.

My questions are:
- Which types of paint are best suited for the MDF or laminated surfaces of Brimnes?
- How should the surface be prepared to ensure good paint adhesion without damaging the laminate?
- Are there specific techniques to create sharp edges or clean transitions between colors?
- Any experience with multi-color projects on Ikea furniture in general?

I would be very grateful for any tips, do’s and don’ts, including recommendations on materials, tools, and the process.

Thanks in advance!

For painting the Ikea Brimnes, I recommend the following approach:

- Type of paint: Water-based acrylic paint is ideal for MDF and laminated surfaces, as it has low odor, dries quickly, and is not aggressive towards the laminate.
- Preparation:
- Thoroughly clean and degrease the surface.
- Lightly sand with 220-grit sandpaper to improve adhesion without completely removing the laminate.
- Remove any dust afterward.
- Primer: Optional but advisable for laminated surfaces to achieve better coverage and adhesion. Use a bonding primer specially designed for laminates.
- Multi-color technique:
- Masking is crucial: Use high-quality painter’s tape that won’t lift under the paint.
- Apply several thin coats of paint instead of a few thick ones to get sharp edges.
- Finish: A clear coat can be applied to protect the paint and make the surface more resistant to abrasion.

One more tip: Test the materials on an inconspicuous spot or a scrap piece before painting the entire piece of furniture.

That really worked well for me, especially with color transitions. With a piece of furniture like the Brimnes, which has clean lines, the result turns out really neat. However, I totally understand if you feel uncertain—I also had doubts at first about whether I needed to be a professional painter to get it right.

What also helped me was patience! Always let each color and layer dry thoroughly and sand lightly before applying the next. You’ll notice how much better the paint adheres and how smooth the surface becomes.

A little anecdote: When I painted my first piece, the paint ran under the masking tape—since then, I’ve been very careful to press the tape down firmly.

A bit of encouragement to anyone hesitating: take it step by step, and the result is truly rewarding when you work carefully.

A few additional thoughts on painting the multi-colored Ikea Brimnes:

- Since the Brimnes fronts are partly laminated, I would advise against using aggressive solvents or heavily abrasive sanding methods. Otherwise, the laminate may peel off or develop waves.
- Use DUPLI-COLOR or similar paints that are specifically designed for plastic and laminated furniture. These provide better adhesion without significant damage during surface preparation.
- For masking, I use thin, specialized painter’s tape designed for use on smooth surfaces. This helps minimize paint bleeding underneath.
- For multi-colored painting, a fine brush is useful for edges, while a small foam roller works well for larger areas.
- A personal tip: if possible, disassemble the furniture and paint the parts flat—this allows for a more even finish and makes masking easier.

Effective preparation and ample drying time are key to success.

This is a tip I fully support!

I also took apart my Brimnes wardrobe into individual pieces and painted the doors and drawers separately. This makes painting easier and helps avoid drips on the sides. Additionally, you can work on several surfaces at the same time and better coordinate drying.

As an additional note: be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and allow at least 24 hours of drying time before reassembling. This helps prevent dirt and fingerprints.

From my experience, I’ve learned that a project like this takes a bit longer than you initially expect. But with some patience and planning, it’s definitely manageable.
