ᐅ How can Malm drawers be made silent?

Hello everyone, I have Malm chests of drawers with multiple drawers, and I noticed that the drawers creak or slam quite loudly when opening and closing. I’m looking for ways to make these Malm drawers as quiet as possible without having to replace the entire drawer slides. Are there simple or proven methods to reduce friction or dampen the noise? Maybe some tricks using materials like felt, silicone, or something else? I’m looking forward to practical tips that can provide a lasting solution.

Use lubricant: Here I clearly recommend a silicone-based spray

That’s a good tip, but you should be cautious when using silicone-based spray: it can make the surface somewhat slippery, which may make it harder to control the opening of some drawers. In my experience, a combination of wax and felt works best because the wax conditions the surface and reduces friction, while the felt cushions vibrations and contact.

Additionally, I recommend regularly inspecting the drawer slides and sanding down any small irregularities – often, annoying noises are caused by very minor unevenness.

What exactly does the interior of your drawers look like? Are there metal strips, plastic rails, or just wooden guides?

I would like to add that, in addition to mechanical measures, the proper loading of the drawers also plays a role. If the drawers are too heavy or unevenly loaded, this can increase the noise.

Sometimes, you can slightly loosen or “settle” the drawer by gently tapping the sides with a rubber mallet and reseating the drawer – this helps it find a better position in the slides.

The installation of the furniture piece to the wall can also affect its behavior in some cases. Otherwise, vibrations may transfer to the entire piece of furniture.

From a technical perspective, it should be noted that Malm drawers are not designed with special noise insulation in mind. Therefore, the most effective measures are:

- Cleaning the runners
- Proper adjustment of the drawers
- Using felt or foam rubber dampers on friction surfaces

Silicon spray makes the movement smoother

This is a quick solution, but it should be noted that long-term use of silicone spray can lead to deposits on wooden surfaces that are difficult to remove.

Permanent solutions tend to involve mechanical interventions, such as replacing the running rails with drawer slides that have metal runners, which can be more costly and time-consuming.

The tips presented are practical and recommended if you want to keep the effort minimal.
