ᐅ How can I make Ikea BESTA doors close more quietly and smoothly?

Hello everyone, I have a question regarding my Ikea Besta furniture, specifically the doors. I find that they close relatively loudly and harshly, which is quite disturbing during quiet moments or in the evening. My question is: how can Ikea Besta doors be made to close more quietly and softly?

I have heard about soft-close hinges but am unsure if they are practical or if there are other effective solutions, such as additional dampers or special adhesive pads. It would be great if you could also share your experiences on how to best implement this without too much effort or expensive options.

Thank you in advance!

I find this topic really interesting! It was the same for me until I bought and installed proper soft-close hinges. This completely changed the closing experience—no more loud noises, very pleasant. For anyone still considering it: it’s definitely worth it! 😊

I simply fitted soft silicone bumpers inside my BESTA doors. This significantly reduces the slamming.

This solution is practical and low-cost; however, depending on the installation position, the door edge may eventually wear down after repeated impacts, or the bumpers might come loose. Therefore, durability should be taken into consideration.

In addition to mechanical retrofitting, adjusting the hinges can also make a big difference. Often they are set too tight, or the door is slightly misaligned, causing the harsh impact.

Absolutely, hinge adjustment is an underestimated factor. Especially for heavy or large doors, professional alignment is recommended, or at least a precise guide should be followed.

So, to the thread starter: Which hinges are currently installed, and have you already tried adjusting them?

Thank you very much for the many helpful tips! Currently, I have the original Ikea standard folding hinges installed, not the soft-close versions. The doors are medium weight, and I suspect that the weight plays a role in the closing noise.

I have tried a rough adjustment but haven’t yet systematically fine-tuned them to fit perfectly. I haven’t tested rubber buffers or similar dampers so far.

Does anyone have experience with whether replacing the hinges with soft-close ones on Besta doors is doable with little effort? I’m especially interested in whether they match the pre-drilled screw holes or if new holes need to be drilled.

Usually, soft-close hinges from Ikea are partially directly compatible with the standard hinges, as the screw holes and mounting plates are identical or very similar.

Procedure for the replacement:
- Remove the original hinges
- Install the soft-close hinges, paying attention to the position of the mounting plates
- In most cases, the pre-drilled holes fit; if not, they can be easily adjusted or new holes can be drilled with minimal effort

If you can’t find special soft-close hinges, there are also retrofit kits available that attach to the existing hinges and add the soft-close damping, so a full hinge replacement isn’t necessary.

However, I recommend checking the weight of the doors carefully before installation, as very heavy doors may require adjustable soft-close settings to prevent the closing from becoming difficult.

To add my perspective: if you value a quiet door, a combination of several measures can be the best approach.

My suggestion:
- Gentle adjustment of the hinges – this reduces the door weight when closing
- Installation of small rubber buffers or soft spacers at contact points
- If possible, complete replacement with soft-close hinges, as these provide strong final damping

It is also important to regularly check the doors to ensure that hinges and dampers are properly secured, because a loose part can cause rattling or even more noise.

If you are willing to experiment, it is worth installing a buffer test set (some manufacturers offer sets with several different types of buffers) so you can find the optimal combination.
