I started digging out the basement wall yesterday because I am having problems with the wastewater and telephone lines during heavy rain. Unfortunately, the connections are buried under a thick layer of coarse construction debris. It is extremely laborious to dig out the material, but I also don’t want to order a mini excavator right away. What tools would be best to make progress, or are there any other affordable solutions for this problem?

Excavating by hand is very labor-intensive, which is why nowadays you’ll hardly find any contractors who do it that way. They usually use a mini excavator right away. There is no cheaper solution if you do it yourself, at least not financially; in terms of craftsmanship and workload, the excavator is the more cost-effective option.

Hello,

We had to do the same last year because our basement was always damp. I wanted to do it by hand with my buddy. The depth is 2.5 meters (8 feet 2 inches) and after one meter (3 feet 3 inches) we gave up. Our soil is very heavy and clayey. It was simply impossible to get in.

Then my buddy got a small excavator, and after that it was almost done by itself.

Conclusion: Not everything can be done by hand.

That’s true, and we have had the same experiences. But doing everything by hand is really hard work. We then decided to rent a mini excavator. However, it’s important to compare the offers. With some providers, the operator is included in the price, while with others they are not. Also, make sure to get a quote for the pick-up and delivery costs. These are all expenses that need to be managed.

Nowadays, nothing works without technology. Especially a floor covered with construction debris cannot be cleared by hand. A mini excavator is perfect for this task.

No, nobody does that kind of work by hand anymore. Small excavators like that are available for rent everywhere. I did the same, and the rental price included delivery and pickup.
