onhelmarHello everyone, I’m looking for a practical and sturdy way to add extra hooks to my Ikea Pax wardrobe. The goal is to create more flexibility for hanging bags, scarves, or belts without compromising the overall stability or the existing appearance. It’s also important to me that the hooks are easy to install, ideally without making major modifications to the Pax itself. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which type of hooks work best and how to attach them securely to the wardrobe? Thanks in advance for your advice!
Hello onhelmar,
I would like to provide you with a more detailed guide on how to equip your Pax with additional hooks effectively:
1. Material selection: Make sure the hooks are made of metal or sturdy plastic so they can hold the weight of bags or clothing items securely.
2. Attachment:
- Adhesive hooks: Easy to install but better suited for lighter items. It is important to thoroughly clean and degrease the surface before applying.
- Screw hooks: Ideal for heavier loads are small screw-in hooks. It is best to choose hooks with a threaded screw. Be careful not to drill too deep to avoid damaging the load-bearing structure of the Pax.
3. Positioning:
- Inside on the side walls of the Pax, possibly under the shelves, is usually best.
- The back panel or inside of the doors can also be used if you find solid spots there.
Tip: Avoid damaging the back panel if it is made of thin cardboard.
If you have any issues with the installation, I am happy to help.

Small screw hooks are ideal for heavier loads.I completely understand the hesitation to drill holes – I felt the same because the cabinet was actually fine as it was. For me, it was reassuring to hear that the screw hooks really hold well, and now I have much better organization. It’s a small risk, but the improvement in usability is definitely worth it!
As an additional note: If you choose screw-in hooks, I recommend pre-drilling with a thin drill bit to prevent the material from splitting or cracking. Make sure the screws match the thickness of the material; the side panels of the Pax are about 16 mm (0.63 inches) particleboard. When mounting on the back panel, be cautious, as it is often thinner and less stable.
For adhesive hooks, keep in mind that they only adhere well to permanently smooth and grease-free surfaces. The interior wood of the Pax, for example, can sometimes be too rough, which impairs adhesion.

I also installed hooks in my Pax wardrobe – small metal hooks that I screwed directly into the interior wall. The result: great organization for belts and bags!
I had tried adhesive hooks, but eventually my children’s fur hat was too heavy for them. Since then, I’ve used screw-in hooks – they hold really well. And I think the wardrobe still looks nice. So: don’t be afraid to drill here, it’s definitely worth it.
