Hello everyone, I would like to know the best way to modify an Ikea PAX wardrobe for multifunctional use. The goal is to optimize the storage space so that it serves several purposes at the same time – for example, as a clothes closet but also as a workspace or media center. What ideas for modifications or changes to the interior layout can you recommend to make the PAX as flexible and versatile as possible? I look forward to your creative suggestions and experiences with projects like this.

For better uniformity of use, it is recommended to enhance the Pax with modular interior components, such as adjustable shelves and removable drawers. For incorporating a workspace, drawer slides with reinforced load capacity are suitable, allowing the extension of a pull-out work surface. Additionally, cable grommets are important to provide a secure and tidy place for electronic devices without disrupting cable management.

I think the possibilities are somewhat overestimated there.

Sometimes, it is precisely the overestimation that leads to good innovations. Why shouldn't a PAX be useful for more? I recently saw a project where a PAX was converted into a mini kitchen module, featuring a fold-out work surface and an integrated space for a refrigerator. You just need to stay creative and reconsider the conventional purpose of furniture. The question is whether you remain open to ideas or stubbornly stick to standards.

I agree with that. However, when it comes to renovations, a realistic assessment is always necessary, especially regarding load-bearing capacity and functionality. It is advisable to take specific measurements and calculate the loads before installing heavy appliances or countertops, for example. Multifunctionality only applies if multiple functions can coexist without significant limitations.

I modified my PAX to create a combination of storage and workspace. I kept the lower section as a cabinet but installed a fold-out tabletop supported by gas springs. On the outside, you only see closed doors, but inside there is a small workspace with a power bank connection and special LED lighting. It’s very practical for me and looks neat!

Using gas springs for fold-out work surfaces is indeed a very elegant solution. They stabilize the workspace and make it easier to use. Additionally, it is advisable to treat surfaces to be water- and scratch-resistant, especially if devices or drinks will be used there. Good ventilation should also be considered when electronic equipment is stored inside the cabinet.

Thank you all for your contributions! The advice on stability, wiring, and the use of gas springs has been very helpful. I am considering a combination of an extendable table with a reinforced substructure and modular shelving. I might also build a solution with a folding door that conceals the workspace. Are there any additional tips on how to make the most of the ceiling height in a PAX unit without making access difficult? Thanks again!
