Hello everyone, I am planning to repaint my Ikea Platsa cabinet to give it a custom look. However, I am concerned about the durability and protection of the painted surface. My question is: What is the best way to protect the freshly painted surface of Ikea Platsa furniture from mechanical damage, scratches, and general wear, so that the new finish stays looking good for a long time? I would like to know which sealants, types of paint, or additional coating steps have proven effective, and if anyone has experience with specific sealants for MDF or particleboard, as used in Platsa. Thanks in advance for your tips and advice!

Hey, I also painted my Platsa and my experience was that good preparation is almost everything. Sand, sand, sand! After that, I applied a thin layer of water-based clear coat—matte, as I prefer.

The result now feels really pleasant, almost velvety. So far, the scratches have been minimal. However, I would recommend allowing more time for sealing and applying several very thin layers instead of one thick one.

It may sound obvious, but the protection is definitely better this way. Good luck!

If you want a beautiful, natural look, pay attention to matte or satin finishes. They are a bit less durable but more authentic.

I agree, but I would add that the level of protection shouldn’t be overestimated. In my opinion, all sealants are only as good as the preparation and application. Especially with furniture made from MDF with foil coating, you can’t expect miracles.

It’s a myth that any clear coat can make a surface 100% resistant. What’s important is to still use the areas subject to wear carefully and maintain regular upkeep.

A special sealant offers more protection against moisture and dirt than against mechanical scratches.

I would recommend a combination: primer, paint, and clear coat with a PU (polyurethane) component combined. This way you achieve good protection and preserve the color. Make sure to sand Ikea boards thoroughly.

Use an adhesive primer, sand the surface, apply acrylic paint, and then a clear coat, preferably polyurethane-based. This ensures the longest durability.
