Hello everyone,

I would like to know the best way to renovate the surface of IKEA Billy shelves without completely replacing the unit. The goal is to refresh or improve the typical laminate or melamine finish, for example by addressing scratches, discoloration, or minor damage. What methods are suitable for this? Should you sand and apply new paint, or is it better to use a new coating with film or special paint? Are there proven materials or techniques to achieve a smooth, durable surface? I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Does anyone have reliable experimental data or practical experience regarding the durability of paint on melamine surfaces in household use?

In my experience, the durability of paint on melamine is significantly lower compared to wood or MDF with paint finishes. The smooth, non-porous surface prevents a strong mechanical bond. Even with primer, chipping or rubbing off can occur, especially on edges and under heavy use.

Therefore, covering with film or so-called spray foil is usually more practical, as these options are more flexible and better accommodate cracks or chips caused by movement.

How much load will the shelves bear, and are there any color or pattern preferences?

The shelves will mainly be used as traditional bookcases in home offices, with moderate loads from books and decorative items. Visually, something simple and modern, possibly matte or satin finish, ideally in white or wood effect. Durability is important, as the shelves should maintain a good appearance over time.

Thanks in advance for the advice!

For the renovation, I have had good experience with sanding followed by applying a primer coat (adhesion primer). After that, several layers of satin acrylic paint. Important: sand lightly between coats with fine sandpaper and allow sufficient drying times. The surface feels slightly rougher than the original but looks noticeably higher quality and holds up quite well indoors.

A common approach for minor scratches is to repair them using color-matched wax sticks or repair kits designed for melamine-coated furniture.

This is definitely the simplest and most cost-effective solution for most users. For a complete refresh, I recommend either a high-quality furniture film with a wood grain or solid color finish, or the spray film that has already been mentioned here.

Before applying the film, the shelf must be clean and free of grease! For precise edges, it is also important to cut the film with a sharp utility knife.
