ᐅ How can Pax doors be retrofitted with a soft-close function?

saufa47Hello everyone,
I would like to retrofit my IKEA Pax doors with a soft-close feature. The doors are currently quite loud when closing, and I believe a soft-close function would significantly improve comfort.
My question is: How can you add a soft-close function to standard Pax wardrobe doors? Are there specific kits or individual components needed, and how complex is the installation usually? I have the four-panel doors with glass inserts.
I appreciate any tips, instructions, or experiences that could help me with this project!

Hey saufa47,
that sounds like a great idea! 😄 Soft-close for Pax cabinets is basically the upgrade for whisper-quiet living rooms – no more door-slamming overload!
Basically, there are two options: either you install so-called soft-close dampers, which are small helpers that can be mounted directly on the hinges or inside the doors, or you simply replace the hinges with IKEA’s own soft-close versions.
- If you buy original IKEA soft-close hinges, they are usually plug and play—you just swap out the old hinges and you’re done.
- Alternatively, there are universal soft-close dampers that you attach to the inside of the door or to the cabinet frame to cushion the door’s impact.
Installation is not complicated, but if your doors have glass panels, it’s best to use hinges with integrated soft-close functions. That guarantees quieter operation and looks nicer too 🙂
Good luck! And if you want, I can put together a DIY guide for you later, in case you don’t have IKEA service nearby.

Soft-close for Pax is basically the upgrade for living room silence – no more door-slamming overkill!Well, I don’t see it that simply. Soft-close has become more of a marketing gimmick that makes you think the door will close gently, but with many cheap retrofit solutions, the whole system gets twisted and the doors sag more than before.
Don’t be afraid to close the door firmly – that has its own appeal! 😄 But back to the topic:
I would definitely recommend using original IKEA hinges if you want to retrofit. And one more tip: before converting, check if your doors are compatible with the new hinges. Otherwise, you’ll end up with more problems than enjoyment.
If you’re confident doing the retrofit yourself, keep in mind that some soft-close systems don’t fully close the door – they only dampen the final impact. That can get annoying over time if you weren’t expecting it.

I can only encourage saufa47: soft-close for the Pax doors is totally worth it! I upgraded mine a few months ago and am super happy with the decision! 🎉
Here’s how it went for me: I used the IKEA soft-close hinges – they fit perfectly, nothing wobbles, nothing sticks, and the doors close very quietly and smoothly.
It’s important to measure carefully before buying to know exactly what type of hinge you have (for example, cup hinges) and whether all the doors are really the same. And yes, installation is a bit fiddly, but with a small screwdriver and about half an hour per door, it’s done.
In the end, the whole setup feels much more premium, and I don’t compromise anymore on our Pax wardrobe doors without soft-close.
Good luck, you can do it! 💪

It’s important to distinguish that the quality of the soft-close components and the door mechanism must be compatible. Often, retrofitting is recommended generically without considering compatibility.
Therefore, before retrofitting, I would always check these points:
- Door construction (e.g., glass overlay)
- Type of hinge
- Weight and dimensions of the door
- Type of installation (whether it’s an edge closer or an integrated soft-close hinge)
This is the only way to avoid doors hanging crooked or damaging the dampers.
Anyone who values durability should, if in doubt, use the original IKEA parts or at least choose high-quality dampers with a sophisticated mechanism that are explicitly suitable for Pax.
To give a concrete answer to the question: Yes, it can be done, but only if these technical details are carefully considered.
