Hello everyone, I have two MALM nightstands from Ikea and want to protect them from scratches as well as possible. Since I often place small items like keys or gadgets on the table, I’m concerned about fine scratches that can quickly make the surface look worn. Therefore, I’m looking for practical and sustainable methods to effectively protect the surface without affecting its appearance. I’m particularly interested in specific products or simple DIY solutions that are suitable for the MDF surface of the MALM nightstands. How do you protect your nightstands from scratches, and what would you recommend?

Hi, I would recommend attaching felt pads underneath all items you place on the table. A thin, clear protective plastic film can also help. This prevents direct scratches on the painted surface.

Hello Pegele, as you have already noticed, the MALM nightstands have a painted and laminated MDF surface, which is easy to maintain but prone to scratches. To protect the surface, felt pads placed under frequently used items are a very good idea. Alternatively, you can have a thin glass sheet custom-cut to place on top. This provides excellent protection against any scratches and is easy to clean, although it is a bit more elaborate. If you prefer a more flexible option, there are self-adhesive transparent protective films specifically designed for furniture – these offer good protection and are relatively affordable.

That sounds reasonable in theory, but wouldn’t it be somewhat impractical? Glass might be unnecessarily heavy for a bedside table, and altered edges could even pose new safety hazards. I’m wondering if there are any hardening coatings or lacquer products that can be applied directly to toughen the surface. Has anyone had experience with this?

There are actually special laminate protective films available that are water- and scratch-resistant. They can usually be removed quite easily without leaving any residue. This would be a good alternative to glass if you want to protect the surface without adding much weight.

I had the same thought. Since I want to prevent not only scratches but also light wear, some kind of sealant would be interesting. However, I’m unsure whether you can simply apply a clear varnish or sealant to IKEA furniture without altering the appearance or damaging the surface. Maybe someone has specific product recommendations or experience?
