I recently bought some IKEA Malm furniture, mainly dressers and nightstands in white. While they are functional and simple, I find them a bit plain and would like to enhance their appearance without making it too complicated or rendering the furniture unusable.
My question to the community is: How can you easily and stylishly upgrade Malm furniture? Are there proven methods or tricks—such as new handles, vinyl wraps, paint, or even small decorative elements? I am also open to more unusual solutions that don’t require a complete repaint. It’s important that the modification is durable and positively influences the character of the furniture.
Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

A practical way to visually enhance Malm furniture is to start by replacing the handles. Since most Malm dressers come with simple, smooth handles, using stainless steel, brass, or ceramic handles can create a very personalized style.
Applying adhesive films can also be effective, provided that high-quality, self-adhesive furniture foil is used, which can be removed without leaving residue. Colors such as wood grain, marble, or matte finishes change the appearance with little effort.
Another option is to paint individual drawer fronts in accent colors, with sanding and priming beforehand significantly improving durability.
It is essential to use quality products for paints and handles to ensure the furniture does not lose value or appearance after a short time.

Additionally, I lined the inside of some drawers with wallpaper that becomes visible when the drawers are opened. It’s a nice little touch that’s quick to do and not immediately noticeable from the outside.
If you want to paint, it’s best to use good sandpaper (grit 220-320) and acrylic paint designed specifically for furniture. This creates a smooth surface that remains durable. You can also use stencils to apply patterns, resulting in very individual designs that don’t look too busy.
Be patient when painting and allow enough drying time to make your work last longer.
In addition to the previous suggestions, I would like to point out the option of customizing Malm furniture with stickers or vinyl decals that are specifically designed for furniture surfaces.
This method ensures better paint adhesion and prevents peeling over time.
Additionally, you can paint the back panel or side surfaces of the furniture with a contrasting color or pattern to add subtle accents that still catch the eye.
Attaching oval or rectangular mirror panels to individual fronts can also create a striking visual effect and make the room feel more open. It is important to prepare all modifications carefully to ensure the furniture remains stable in the long term.

I am also open to more unusual solutions that don’t require a complete repaint.I understand that wanting a visual refresh without much effort is very reasonable, especially if you don’t have much DIY experience.
I once covered Malm evening cabinets with fabric covers that slip over the fronts like protective sleeves. This not only made the appearance friendlier but also protected the surface.
Maybe this could be an option for you as well, if you like different fabrics that can be changed regularly, making the furniture feel more cozy.
The most important insight for me: changes should be easy to reverse if your taste happens to change.
