Hello everyone,

I recently purchased some Malm furniture from IKEA, including cabinets and drawers that fit very well in my room. However, I am concerned about the delicate surfaces and how to effectively protect them from unsightly scratches. The furniture has a white coated finish, and I have heard that while the surface looks modern, it is also quite prone to scratches and minor damage.

My main question is: how can Malm furniture be protected from scratches without affecting its appearance or feel? Are there proven protective products, films, or home remedies that work well for this? And what should definitely be avoided to prevent long-term damage to the furniture?

I would appreciate detailed advice, especially if anyone has practical experience with this topic and can share what works well and what doesn’t. Thank you!

Attach felt pads to the bottom of all items.

This is the most important point, as mechanical abrasion usually occurs due to movement or accidental impacts with hard objects.

Additionally, I recommend keeping furniture surfaces as clean as possible, since dirt particles can act like sandpaper.

Furthermore, cleaning with pH-neutral agents and using soft microfiber cloths is ideal to avoid damaging the surface.

Home remedies like beeswax or polish can make the surface sticky and attract dirt.

I agree; caution is advised here.

Those who still prefer natural care should only use products specifically designed for laminate or melamine and test them first on hidden areas.

Hello plonau,

I completely understand your concern – when you have furniture with a specific look, you don’t want it to be covered in scratches after a short time!

I have Malm dressers myself, and to protect them I use a combination of several tips from this thread: protective films, felt pads, and careful handling. Being mindful and gentle with the furniture really helps to preserve the surface.

Don’t worry if a small scratch appears now and then – it’s not the end of the world, and the piece remains functional and attractive. 🙂

Sometimes it also helps to adjust your expectations regarding durability with daily use. This way, you stay satisfied and enjoy your furniture for a long time!
