Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought the IKEA Malm bed and now want to disassemble it, either to move or to store the individual parts more easily. Although I still have a rough idea of the assembly process, taking it apart is still a challenge for me, especially without the manual.

My question is: What is the recommended procedure for simply and carefully disassembling the Malm bed or wardrobe without causing damage? Are there specific tools that are essential? What is the best way to avoid damaging screws or joints?

I look forward to helpful tips and tricks from you that make the process easier and possibly point out common pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

Sometimes the design is made for the mass market – meaning the construction is not optimized for repeated assembly and disassembly.

Exactly. So always use screws only, do not apply force.

Remove the slatted frame, loosen the screws, and carefully take off the panels.

Plastic anchors tend to disappear after multiple rebuilds.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, I would like to add that special attention should be paid to the connection between the side panels and the head/footboard on the Malm bed. This is often secured with locking fasteners and wooden dowels. The fasteners require some patience when disassembling – you usually need to turn them slightly and carefully pull the parts apart.

When assembling, be sure that none of the connectors are bent or misaligned. Even a small distortion can lead to instability later on.

For a professional finish: always tighten the screws by hand after reassembling, then later retighten them with the correct torque.

One more little tip for anyone planning to take apart the Malm bed:

If a part absolutely won’t budge, carefully check whether all screws and locks are fully loosened. With IKEA furniture, there are sometimes small metal clips or hidden plastic fasteners involved.

Be careful not to use excessive force – otherwise, the material might tear.

Also, documenting the assembly process (for example, by making small notes on the furniture or taking photos during disassembly) can be a big advantage when reassembling later.

I agree with the previous advice but would also recommend taking your time and working patiently when disassembling.

Especially with the Malm bed, lubricants like wax sticks or even a little silicone spray on the joints can help if you notice the parts are sticking.

And very importantly: keep all screws, dowels, and small parts in small sealable boxes. This is often underestimated after disassembly but saves a lot of hassle and effort when rebuilding.

Good luck with your project! 🙂
