Hello everyone,

I am considering modifying my Ikea Platsa system to optimize it for my pet needs. Specifically, I am interested in ideas and practical tips on how to adapt the modules so they can serve as a cat hideout, dog bed, or storage space for food bags and toys without compromising the stability and functionality of the furniture.

Has anyone had experience with such modifications? Which materials, tools, or additional components work best? And how can the interior space be organized most effectively to keep everything practical while remaining pet-friendly?

I look forward to your opinions and experiences, including concrete examples or references. Thanks in advance!

I can understand that well, as remodeling for pet needs often requires a lot of adjustments and patience. I had a similar experience when I renovated my Platsa for my old dog. It is important to create enough retreat areas and to choose materials that are sturdy but also comfortable.

Sometimes you might be tempted to change too much at once – in such cases, it helps to work in stages and give the animals time to adapt.

I would recommend covering the side panels with materials like sisal or scratching foil for cats. Hiding spots can be created using boxes on the shelves. Important: Do not leave any small screws or nails exposed, as they pose a risk of injury.

Do you think it’s possible to create an interior layout with removable shelves to allow for flexible storage options? Also, I’m unsure whether I should remove or just take off the original doors. Does anyone have experience with this?

Removable shelves are definitely feasible as long as the holders are not permanently altered. Removing the doors increases ventilation and space but also exposes more clutter to view. An alternative is to leave the doors open and organize the compartments using fabric boxes or baskets.

Doors can be removed using simple clips or magnetic catches, making them easy to reattach. For cats, mesh hammocks inside the PLATSA are very popular and can be hung within it.

Thank you, that sums it up well. I especially want my cat to have a private retreat of his own, but everything should also remain practical for everyday use.

That sounds interesting. Do you have any tips on where to find suitable hammocks in standard sizes or how to make them yourself?

For hammocks, simply use a sturdy, breathable piece of fabric, add small eyelets in the corners, and attach it to the inside of PLATSA with carabiners or hooks. Alternatively, old T-shirts can also work, as long as they are well sewn.
