PAUMAUHello everyone,
I recently purchased an Ikea Pax wardrobe system and am considering decorating the doors with self-adhesive vinyl films. My goal is to apply either a solid color or a decorative pattern to soften the simple design and give the room a more personal touch.
However, I have some concerns regarding the practical application:
- How well do the films adhere to the smooth doors?
- Should any special preparation be done beforehand to avoid air bubbles or wrinkles?
- Are some materials better suited than others?
- And what about durability in everyday use – especially regarding cleaning and wear?
I’m particularly interested in how you approach applying the films and any tips you have to achieve a clean, long-lasting result. I would be grateful for personal experiences, do’s and don’ts. Thanks in advance!

Hey PAUMAU, great question! I love customizing Ikea furniture with self-adhesive films – it’s a really fun way to get creative! 😊
Regarding your points: The films stick very well to the smooth Pax doors if you clean the surface thoroughly beforehand (using alcohol is best to remove grease and dust). Then be sure to use a squeegee or a firm spatula to smooth out any bubbles – it’s best to do this in several small steps.
A little tip: Just start and don’t try to apply too much at once. My favorite films are the ones with a matte finish, as they look high-quality and are more scratch-resistant than glossy options. Also, after applying, you can gently heat the film with a hairdryer to make it more flexible and help it conform well to edges.
Feel free to keep us updated on how it goes! Go for it and have fun decorating!

- Preparation: The surface should be free of grease, dry, and as smooth as possible. Cleaning with isopropyl alcohol is recommended.
- Material selection: PVC films with a matte finish provide better scratch resistance and a higher-quality appearance. Vinyl films are also dimensionally stable.
- Application: Apply the films slowly and evenly, using a plastic squeegee, working from the center toward the edges to avoid air bubbles.
- Attachment on edges: Heat (e.g., with a hairdryer) makes the film more flexible and facilitates fitting.
- Durability: These types of films can be cleaned with mild detergents, but harsh chemicals should be avoided.
This approach ensures visually appealing and long-lasting results.

Hello PAUMAU,
I would like to add that it can be helpful to lightly roughen the surface with fine sandpaper before applying the adhesive film, especially if the doors are very smooth and glossy. This makes it easier for the film to stick. But be careful to sand only very lightly!
I also recommend working with the film at room temperature, as adhesives tend to perform worse in cold conditions.
If you notice air bubbles, you can use a needle to make small punctures to let the air escape – this often works better than just pressing down.
When choosing the films, make sure to check if they can be removed cleanly, in case you want to change something later.
I hope this helps! Good luck with the makeover.
