GEDAGAHello everyone,
I have a very specific question for you today: How can the Ikea PAX wardrobe be optimally protected with frequent use, so that both the visible surfaces and the mechanisms stay in good condition for as long as possible?
My concern is because our PAX is used daily, and I am already noticing some signs of wear on the doors and tracks. Therefore, I am looking for tips that go beyond the usual cleaning recommendations—such as protective measures against scratches, wear on the rollers, or ideas on how to ensure the wardrobe’s stability over time without compromising ease of use.
Perhaps you also have experience with useful accessories or alternative materials that can be added. I look forward to your well-informed replies, including advice on the proper way to install protective devices.
Thanks in advance!

Hello GEDAGA,
Thank you for your very well-structured and thoughtful question. For frequently used PAX systems, it is advisable to combine several protective measures to extend their lifespan.
First, the rollers and track systems are key wear points. It is important to regularly apply a special silicone or PTFE spray to keep the rollers moving smoothly, thereby reducing friction. Be sure to use these products sparingly and only where needed to avoid attracting dust.
For the visible surfaces, transparent protective films can be used to prevent scratches without affecting the appearance. Although Ikea does not offer specific protective films for PAX, suitable furniture films from specialty retailers are an affordable alternative. For doors with mirrors or glass inserts, I also recommend handling them carefully to avoid stress cracks.
In addition, I suggest regularly checking recessed handles and handle strips, tightening or replacing them as necessary, since frequent pulling and pushing can quickly cause signs of wear.
Finally, I want to mention that gently opening and closing the doors, especially with soft-close variants, greatly contributes to their durability.
If you have further questions or are interested in practical instructions, I am happy to help!

Hey GEDAGA,
I think your question is great because the PAX is really heavily used every day. I put a thin protective film on the doors and can honestly tell how much that helps!
I can definitely confirm that! In addition, I cut small pieces from old felt pads and placed them under the clothes rods. This not only stops the hooks from making loud noises but also protects the wood on the inside.
I’m really happy with these little tricks; they make life easier and extend the life of the wardrobe! Definitely worth trying out! 🙂

Good morning,
to further elaborate on GEDAGA’s question, I would like to address some technical details that are often overlooked when it comes to protecting and maintaining the value of the Ikea PAX with heavy use.
First of all, it is important to regularly check the assembly screws and fasteners for tightness. Especially with moving parts such as doors or drawers, even slight loosening can cause increased play and eventually lead to damage or wear. I recommend tightening the screw connections approximately every three months using a hex key (Allen wrench).
Furthermore, the choice of the right heavy-duty drawer slides plays a key role. The PAX system is usually equipped with roller slides that typically last a long time under frequent use, but there are also versions with metal ball-bearing drawer slides that glide more smoothly and show less wear on the runners. Replacing the slides is worthwhile if you access your drawers often and quickly.
Additionally, installing self-adhesive edge protection profiles on the corners of the vertical carcass panels is very useful. This protects against bumps and scratches, especially when the doors are open and can come into contact with other furniture or walls.
Finally, I would like to pick up Brian’s tip regarding maintenance with silicone spray. It is important to use a product that does not leave oily residues to avoid attracting dust. This increases the durability of the rollers and improves the movement guidance.
I would like to know: Have you already replaced the original rollers with another type, or are you still using the factory-fitted ones? This could give important clues as to which measures are most effective.
Best regards!
