Good morning everyone,

I have a small bedroom with only about 9 square meters (97 square feet) of space and I’m considering how to make the best use of the Ikea Hemnes furniture series to maximize the available area effectively. Specifically, I’m interested in space-saving combinations, storage solutions, and furnishing ideas that ensure enough functionality and a pleasant atmosphere despite the limited space.

How can the Hemnes bed with its integrated drawers be used most effectively? Are there combinations with dressers or shelves from the series that are especially suitable for tight rooms?

I’m also curious if anyone has experience with customizing or supplementing Hemnes furniture—such as modular additions or clever DIY solutions—that help avoid overcrowding the room.

Looking forward to your tips and thoughts on this topic: How can Ikea Hemnes furniture be used for small bedrooms?

The Hemnes bed with drawers is ideal for creating storage space under the bed. Combine it with a tall chest of drawers from the series to make use of vertical space. Shelves can be mounted on the wall above, saving floor space.

arrigota, to address the topic thoroughly, several factors should be considered. The Hemnes bed with built-in drawers provides around 150 liters (5.3 cubic feet) of additional storage space under the bed, which is especially valuable in small bedrooms. It is important to ensure that the drawers are not obstructed during assembly – therefore, the space around the bed should allow at least 60 cm (24 inches) of clearance to enable the drawers to fully open.

Furthermore, the Hemnes chest of drawers with 8 drawers (120 x 96 cm / 47 x 38 inches) is excellent for creating extra storage space. It is particularly advisable not to place it directly against a wall next to or opposite the bed, but rather in a corner of the room to avoid shortening walking paths unnecessarily. The chest can also be expanded with attached shelving units like the Hemnes wall shelf – ideal for books or decoration without taking up additional floor space.

An often overlooked tip is combining this with lighting under the shelves or above the bed to create a sense of visual depth.

I would be interested to know how your room is laid out and whether you are planning other furniture pieces. That way, more targeted solutions could be suggested.

I can add the following: Besides the Hemnes bed with storage, the Hemnes dresser with tall drawers is a very good option for storing both clothing and other personal items. I recommend measuring all furniture carefully beforehand and planning either on graph paper or digitally using a room planner.

In small bedrooms, choosing furniture in light colors or with a white finish is advantageous, as it makes the space feel more open. Hemnes also offers various options with these finishes. Replacing traditional bedside tables with small wall shelves frees up additional floor space.

The combination of bed, dresser, and wall shelves is my top recommendation for small rooms.

I feel the discussion is missing a critical look at the size of the Hemnes furniture. It’s important to remember that the Hemnes series tends to be rather large and heavy. The Hemnes bed is indeed sturdy and offers storage, but that can become problematic in small rooms because it quickly dominates the space.

I completely agree. That’s the first essential step. However, one should also consider whether it makes sense to choose a large Hemnes bed with drawers or perhaps a simpler basic model with separate storage solutions that can be arranged more flexibly.

Also, while the Hemnes dressers are attractive, they are quite bulky. It might be worth considering whether a simple open shelving cube would create a lighter and airier feel.

What are your thoughts, especially regarding visual crowding?

Regarding the topic: The Hemnes series is characterized by a classic, sturdy construction made of solid pine wood, which makes it durable. For small bedrooms, it offers practical options to create additional storage through the combination of a storage bed (with drawers under the sleeping area), dressers with multiple drawers, and wall shelves.

The following points should be considered:
- The Hemnes bed (140x200 cm or 160x200 cm) (55x79 inches or 63x79 inches) with drawers reduces the need for separate under-bed dressers.
- Dressers measuring 80x96 cm or 120x96 cm (31x38 inches or 47x38 inches) provide large drawers, usually with soft-closing mechanisms.
- Wall shelves (e.g., 2–3 pieces above the bed or on free walls) offer storage for books and small items without taking up floor space.

Although the furniture is quite bulky, it can be used efficiently with careful arrangement. Especially effective is the combination of a storage bed and a tall dresser to store textiles as well as other items.

Tip: Carry out good room planning and take accurate measurements beforehand to avoid purchasing mistakes.
