Trato67Hello everyone, I’m considering upgrading my IKEA Hemnes furniture with LED lighting, but I’m unsure about the best way to approach it. Specifically, I’m interested in which types of LED lights are suitable (e.g., LED strips, individual LED spotlights), how to install them in a way that doesn’t damage the furniture, and what technical aspects—such as power supply or dimmers—I should keep in mind. I’m also wondering if there are recommended setups or even ready-made solutions designed specifically for Hemnes, or if it’s better to put something together myself. I would really appreciate any experiences, tips, or tricks on the best way to proceed, especially since I have basic DIY skills but combining furniture upgrades with electrical work is new to me.
The best option is flexible 12V LED strips, which you can easily attach to the back of the shelves using adhesive tape. For power supply, I recommend a power adapter that you can hide well. There are affordable dimmers available to connect in between. Make sure the LED strips are not too bright, as that can cause unnecessary glare.
From a technical perspective, it is important to consider the power supply and cable management. 12V LED strips with appropriate power ratings are ideal to prevent overheating and electrical damage. For installation, using double-sided tape specifically designed for LED strips is recommended to ensure a secure hold without damaging the wood. Additionally, integrating a dimmer switch is advisable to allow flexible adjustment of the lighting to different moods. I also suggest routing the cables inside along the edges of the furniture or through small cable channels to maintain a neat appearance.

That sounds reasonable, but I wonder if the adhesive tape will hold up under long-term stress. Especially with HEMNES, whose finish can be relatively delicate, wouldn’t it be safer to use small brackets or clips? Also, when drilling holes to route cables, care should be taken not to compromise the stability of the furniture. Does anyone have practical experience with alternative mounting methods?

Wouldn’t it be safer to use small brackets or clips? I think fastening with screws or drilling takes the discussion a bit too far. IKEA furniture isn’t designed for electrical installations, but that’s what makes it interesting! LED strips with strong adhesive are sufficient and, most importantly, reversible. Anything else leaves unnecessary marks that can be bothersome later. Also, wouldn’t it be more practical to remove and replace the lighting more often instead of permanently modifying the furniture? My point is, less invasive means more enjoyment in the long run.
I installed warm white LED strips myself in my HEMNES display cabinet and I’m really happy with the result! 🙂 Mounting with 3M tape was super easy, and with a small USB dimmer, I can adjust the brightness continuously – really great for the atmosphere. Tip: Screw terminal connectors for the power connection make later expansions much easier. Just give it a try, you have so much freedom with the colors and the light intensity!
