Hello community, I am currently exploring how to sustainably modify Ikea Hemnes furniture without completely losing the character of the pieces. I am particularly interested in ways to make typical Hemnes items like dressers or beds more durable and environmentally friendly through sustainable alterations. This includes not only aesthetic changes but also improvements to materials, surface treatments, repairs, and possibly modifications that extend the furniture’s lifespan beyond the standard.

Does anyone have experience with sustainable paints, the use of natural oils, or alternative materials for damaged parts? Tips on avoiding chemical finishes or handling the partly glued wood components would also be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

Hello, for a sustainable refurbishment of Hemnes furniture, I recommend: - Sanding off old varnish - Treating with natural oil or beeswax - Repairing damaged parts with wood glue - Reinforcing edges with matching wood strips Often, this is all that is needed to make the furniture more durable and sustainable.

Hello Josin1, I’m happy to share a small DIY tutorial that might help you:

Introduction:
Sustainable modification of Hemnes furniture can generally be divided into surface treatment, repair, and remodeling. The goal is to upgrade the furniture while preserving resources as much as possible.

Step 1: Removing the standard lacquer coating
- Best done mechanically with sandpaper (grit 120-180)
- Avoid chemical paint strippers, as they often contain harmful substances

Step 2: Protecting the surfaces
- Use natural products such as linseed oil, hard wax, or beeswax
- Make sure the products are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds)

Step 3: Repairs
- Use wood-based glue; replace metal or plastic parts with wooden ones whenever possible
- If joints are unstable, replace screws with sustainable wooden joinery

Step 4: Remodeling
- Install additional shelf dividers or inserts made from FSC-certified wood
- Replacing plastic handles with wooden ones promotes sustainability

Common mistakes:
- Insufficient sanding leads to poor adhesion of oils
- Using finishes with harmful solvents

Summary:
Sustainability with Hemnes means protecting raw materials, repairing before replacing, and using natural or certified materials for remodeling.

As a supplement, it should be noted that Hemnes furniture is mostly made from solid pine wood, which responds well to surface treatments with oils or waxes. Important points are:
- Sanding before oiling is essential; otherwise, the pores remain closed and the oil cannot penetrate.
- Sustainable oils include linseed oil or rapeseed oil, both of which are biodegradable.
- Paints or finishes should preferably be low in VOCs or alternatively water-based.
- Repairs to glued components require patience and usually reglueing, as these often involve press-glued joints.
- For long-term care, it is also possible to replace individual damaged wooden panels, but this requires craftsmanship.

The use of plastic or metal bits and spare parts should be minimized if sustainability is a priority.

This is a very important point because when I first renovated, I didn’t pay attention to VOCs and then wondered why there was such a strong smell after painting and how to improve it.

I also think that sustainably modifying furniture like Hemnes is worthwhile because it helps you connect better with the piece and motivates you to use it long-term. However, I sometimes feel that many people are discouraged by the manual work and the necessary preparation.

So if anyone has tips on how to make sanding or oiling more efficient and time-saving, I would be very grateful!

Machine sanding is often the best option when working on multiple pieces of furniture. A random orbital sander with a vacuum-connected dust extraction saves a lot of time and creates less mess. When oiling, a soft cloth helps to spread the oil quickly and evenly, followed by polishing for protection. It’s better to apply thin layers—this is easier to manage and requires less drying time.

You mainly just need proper preparation and good tools.
