Hello everyone, I am planning to upgrade my Ikea Hemnes furniture with LED lighting to improve both illumination and atmosphere. Since the Hemnes series is quite solid and features a classic design, I am wondering about the best way to integrate LED strips or individual light points without negatively affecting the furniture’s appearance or requiring major modifications. Are there specific systems or methods you would recommend? How about power supply, cable management, and installation, especially considering the finished Hemnes furniture? I look forward to any advice, experiences, and tips—also welcome are suggestions covering different levels of effort and cost.
A structured approach is advisable: - First, check the type and size of the furniture where the LEDs will be installed. - Choose high-quality LED strips with the appropriate color tone (warm white is usually preferred) and flexible length. - Opt for a 12V system for safety and easy integration, including a compatible power supply with dimmer option. - Installation: Attach the LED strips to the underside of the shelves, secure cables with clips that can be removed without leaving residue. - If you want to avoid drilling holes, use adhesive clips or magnetic fasteners. - Check the power source or outlet nearby; plan for extension cords if necessary. This approach ensures a clean, maintainable installation and preserves the look of the furniture.
The challenge with Hemnes furniture lies in the combination of solid wood and classic design, which makes retrofitting holes unattractive. Professional LED retrofit systems that use adhesive tapes and neat connectors offer an efficient solution. Plan the power supply so that it remains as concealed as possible or utilize existing outlets nearby. Route cables through cable ducts under the furniture edges and inside. It is also important to consider the load capacity and heat generation of the LEDs to avoid damage to the wood or finish.

If you don't want to damage the furniture, self-adhesive LED strips with internal cable ducts and an external power supply are the best option. This is my favorite. Simple, quick, affordable, and low effort. LEDs with 3000 Kelvin provide warm light color and flexibility.

Therefore, using self-adhesive LED strips with strong enough adhesive, which can be mounted in less visible places – for example under shelves – is recommended. Thanks, that sounds practical. Are there specific brands or products you consider reliable for this purpose? What about the lifespan and replaceability of the strips?

With Hemnes, it is important to pay attention to the wood grain, as screws or drilling can cause damage. I had suspected that as well. Are there real alternatives to install spotlights or downlights without drilling? Would clamp mounting, for example, be a possibility?
Thanks so much in advance for all the great advice that has already been very helpful!
