Hello everyone,
Over the past few months, I have been taking a closer look at the Ikea Hemnes furniture and am wondering how its durability can be improved. Many people say that this furniture is visually appealing and reasonably priced, but after a few years of use, the stability decreases or the surfaces show initial signs of wear. I am especially interested in whether there are recommended care or assembly instructions that contribute to longevity, or if there are practical modifications one can make without affecting the aesthetics.
Are there also any experiences with specific wood or surface treatments, or tips for optimal use to extend the lifespan of the Hemnes series?
I look forward to your expertise and advice, thank you!

The most important factor with IKEA Hemnes furniture is proper assembly. Many stability issues arise from incorrect construction or missing supports.
- Make sure to tighten all screws firmly, but avoid over-tightening (the material can be somewhat soft)
- If possible, reinforce the back panel, for example with a thin plywood sheet
- Use wood glue at the joints as well, if applicable
For surface care, I recommend a wax-based wood oil. It protects against moisture and helps the surfaces look fresh for longer.
Mechanical stress should be minimized, and heavy loads are better distributed across multiple pieces of furniture. This is the best way to keep Hemnes stable over time.

Hey Minmu52, the Hemnes series is definitely a classic! 😄 When it comes to durability, I can only say: "Love is the best wood care product" 😉 – so make sure to regularly take some time to check the furniture and tighten anything that’s loose.
It also helps to stick small pads under the legs to prevent moisture from seeping in from below. And if, like me, you occasionally touch up the color with a matching furniture marker, the pieces look almost like new. Often, it’s the small scratches that give the impression of wear and tear.
Oh, and don’t overload the furniture! 😉 They are sturdy, but not miracle workers when it comes to weight.

I’m really impressed with the Hemnes series and have discovered a few tips that I definitely want to share! 😊
First: Regularly treat the surfaces with linseed oil – this refreshes the wood and makes it more resistant to scratches and water. I do this every few months, and the furniture always looks well cared for!
Second: Be sure to reinforce the corners with metal brackets that you can install discreetly. This adds stability to the furniture and prevents it from wobbling or breaking under stress.
I’ve also noticed that maintaining good humidity is important – not too dry, not too humid, otherwise the wooden parts will expand and contract too much.
Don’t get discouraged, Hemnes furniture can last a really long time!

It protects against moisture and helps the surfaces look fresh for longer. This is a very important tip since Hemnes is made of solid pine, which is particularly susceptible to moisture damage. Regular maintenance with special wood oil (no varnishes, as they reduce breathability) is essential to prevent cracks and warping in the wood.dabasi schrieb:

In conclusion, Hemnes should not be seen simply as "cheap furniture," but as pieces with potential if proper care and caution are applied.
