Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding: "How can IKEA Hemnes furniture be customized with color?"

Specifically, I am looking for ways to transform the often rather rustic or classic white or wood-colored Hemnes furniture to make it look more modern or personal. I am thinking about methods that improve both durability and appearance, so not just using regular paint but proper painting, staining, or perhaps creative techniques such as chalk paint, veneering, or other surface finishing methods.

It would also be important to know the best approach, which tools or products are suitable, and which common mistakes to watch out for. I am also interested in experiences regarding surface preparation (sanding, priming), or combining different techniques.

Are there specific paint systems or types of finishes that work particularly well with the solid wood used in the Hemnes series?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Sanding: Use sandpaper with a grit size of 120 to 180 to remove the original paint or surface sealant.

This will roughen the surface enough to improve adhesion of new paint.

Use of a good primer (e.g., wood primer to enhance paint adhesion)

Priming is essential, especially for Hemnes with its often lacquered surface, to prevent later paint peeling or bubbling.

Recommendation: For solid wood, an acrylic or alkyd primer with high adhesion is suitable.

When using special coatings such as films, the piece of furniture should also be treated beforehand with a degreaser.

Chalk paint is great for simple makeovers and requires little preparation to adhere well.

For longer durability, I would recommend acrylic paint with a primer.

Sand thoroughly and work cleanly.

Best to sand Hemnes thoroughly.
Apply a primer.
Paint with acrylic lacquer for full coverage.
Use clear varnish for protection.
This way, the paint lasts longer.
