Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding: "How can IKEA Hemnes furniture be customized with color?"

Specifically, I am looking for ways to transform the often rather rustic or classic white or wood-colored Hemnes furniture to make it look more modern or personal. I am thinking about methods that improve both durability and appearance, so not just using regular paint but proper painting, staining, or perhaps creative techniques such as chalk paint, veneering, or other surface finishing methods.

It would also be important to know the best approach, which tools or products are suitable, and which common mistakes to watch out for. I am also interested in experiences regarding surface preparation (sanding, priming), or combining different techniques.

Are there specific paint systems or types of finishes that work particularly well with the solid wood used in the Hemnes series?

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hey Kenri!

Your question is great, especially since Hemnes looks quite sturdy and classic – which you can really dress up in a cool way! 😊

I once painted my dresser with chalk paint. The nice thing is: you hardly need any preparation because chalk paint adheres well to almost all surfaces, and it can be sealed really well with wax or special glazes to protect it from wear.

A little tip: When painting or coating, always apply thin layers to avoid unsightly cracks. For a distressed look, you can gently sand, especially on the edges.

If you want to add color, bold, matte shades with chalk paint are very trendy and bring a lot of character.

Good luck, let me know how it goes!

Hello Kenri,

to address your question in detail: The IKEA Hemnes series is mainly made of solid pine wood, which is easy to work with but has some specific characteristics. For color customization, I recommend the following process:

- Thoroughly clean all furniture parts to remove dirt and oils.
- Sanding: Use sandpaper with a grit of 120 to 180 to remove the original paint or surface seal. This step is important for the adhesion of new paint.
- Primer: Apply a wood primer based on acrylic or alkyd to ensure an even result and better adhesion.
- Choice of paint system: Water-based acrylic paints are very popular for Hemnes as they are low-odor and environmentally friendly. Alternatively, high-quality alkyd paints can be used if you want a particularly durable finish.
- Application: Apply several thin layers, sanding lightly in between (grit 220) to eliminate unevenness.
- Protection: Depending on the desired look, a clear coat (matte, satin, or glossy) is recommended, especially for furniture subject to heavy use.

Keep in mind that the wood in the Hemnes series is relatively soft in some areas, so careful sanding during preparation and good sealing are important to prevent scratches and stains.

If you want, I can also discuss creative techniques such as glazes or film coatings. What were you thinking of?

Hi Kenri!

I’m really excited about DIY projects with Hemnes! 😍 What I especially like is that you can try out so many different color codes.

My tip: After sanding, I painted my furniture with a satin acrylic lacquer in a rich petrol blue – it really adds energy to the room! Then I applied a matte clear coat to keep the surface durable.

It looks even better if you use a fine sponge to add subtle texture effects. Be a bit bold with color, and the furniture will become a real eye-catcher!

So: Don’t just stick to white or wood tones, use color to make a statement!

Have fun redesigning!

Just courage with color? Come on, that’s the usual response. I believe that this very mainstream mindset is what makes Hemnes so dull. What if you simply sand it down completely and leave the wood raw, truly natural, instead of covering it with artificial color coatings?

That would truly “transform” the piece—not just in color, but it would give it a completely new texture and appearance.

Besides, all those stains and paints are really just ways to hide the honesty of the wood! Anyone who wants to be truly unique dares to go beyond the paint cans!

Good morning everyone,

I would like to add something – especially when changing the color scheme of Hemnes furniture, surface preparation is extremely important to ensure the results last a long time.

Therefore:
- Thoroughly dust off the furniture piece after sanding
- Use a good primer (e.g., wood primer to improve paint adhesion)
- Strictly observe drying times; otherwise, the final appearance will suffer

For creative techniques, a combination of primer, two layers of paint, and a final sealing with matte or satin finish varnish has proven effective. This provides a pleasant feel while also offering very good resistance to water and abrasion.

If anyone has specific questions about products or tools, I’m happy to help.
