Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring how to effectively and attractively enhance the popular Ikea Hemnes furniture with LED lighting. I am interested not only in the technical aspects but especially in how LED lights can be integrated into the furniture in a way that looks harmonious and is functionally practical.

Are there simple solutions for shelving units, cabinets, or display cases from the HEMNES range that can be retrofitted without much effort? Which types of LED lighting are best suited (e.g., LED strips, spotlights, or recessed lights)?

It would also be great to hear if anyone has practical experience with different installation methods, such as adhesive mounting, screw fixing, or magnetic solutions. Tips on dimming options, power supply, and overall cable management would be very welcome.

I look forward to constructive suggestions and ideas on how to get the best out of combining HEMNES and LED lighting!

That’s the key issue. Although LEDs are small, improper placement can quickly look cheap or create uneven lighting. Personally, I find flexible LED strips to be the most suitable, as they can be adapted to doors, shelves, or back panels.

Yes, but be careful: HEMNES furniture is made of solid wood, which sometimes complicates mounting options. Screws are not always ideal because the wood may split. Clamping profiles or magnetic mounts offer an interesting alternative here.

I have to say, though, that most LED kits on the market do not specifically address installation in solid wood furniture. These may need to be adapted creatively if necessary.

In addition to the previous explanations, here are some facts and practical tips:

- 12V LED strips are easier to control and safer to handle in living spaces.
- A power supply located outside the furniture is recommended to minimize heat generation.
- Cables should be routed so they remain hidden, for example, along the back panels under the shelves.
- For subtle but effective lighting, I recommend warm white LEDs (2700–3000 K), as they enhance the natural tones of wood.

Additionally, the circuit should be equipped with a switch or dimmer. There are special dimmers designed for LED lighting that regulate recessed lights well.

Important: Cable feed-throughs must be executed carefully and neatly to avoid damage and maintain the appearance.

Stick LED strips with a self-adhesive back directly to the inside of the shelf.
Run cables concealed along the back panel.
Use a 12V power supply.
If desired, connect dimmable strips with a simple LED dimmer.
This is a straightforward and neat solution.

Screws are sometimes not ideal because of the risk of wood splitting.

There’s some truth to that! I once tried to attach LED strips directly to my HEMNES bed frame with screws – it ended up a complete mess 😂

My advice: just use strong adhesive tapes. For extra hold, add double-sided tape from the hardware store and you’re good to go.

Plus, dimmable LEDs create the perfect ambiance—whether for cozy reading or simple brightening. The best option is LEDs with a remote control, so you can easily adjust the atmosphere on the fly.

This setup lasts forever, looks great, and is super easy. More DIY satisfaction without the hassle!
