Hello everyone, I recently assembled an Ikea Hemnes wardrobe and noticed that the doors don’t close completely flush and sometimes hang slightly crooked. My question is: How can I easily and accurately adjust Ikea Hemnes doors without damaging the door or having to take the wardrobe apart? I understand the basic function of the door hinges but am unsure how far and in which direction to turn them so that later corrections work well and the door stays straight permanently. Are there any practical tips or tricks for a simple and efficient adjustment, possibly with the help of tools? Thanks in advance for your support!

Hello heidemar64, you raise a good point. The Hemnes doors can often be nicely adjusted by turning the two screws on the hinges. Here is a brief overview:

- The screw closer to the center of the door controls the horizontal movement of the door (left or right).
- The screw at the hinge base (attached directly to the cabinet frame) adjusts the depth, meaning it moves the door in or out.
- Sometimes there is also a vertical adjustment by loosening the hinge mounting on the cabinet frame, allowing the door to hang higher or lower.

It’s best to turn one screw slightly at a time and regularly close the door in between to see how the alignment improves. A Phillips screwdriver with a magnetic tip can help grip the screws well and prevent slipping. If the doors are severely warped, it can sometimes help to unhang the door and realign it.

If you want detailed instructions, I can write a step-by-step guide for you. Feel free to ask!

I would like to provide a more detailed guide on how to properly adjust Ikea Hemnes doors. First, it is important to know that most Ikea hinge types have three adjustment options:

- Horizontal adjustment (left-right): This screw is usually located in the middle of the hinge and moves the door sideways.
- Vertical adjustment (up-down): For this, you usually need to loosen the screws that attach the hinge to the cabinet frame, reposition the door, and then tighten the screws again.
- Depth adjustment (in-out): A screw near the door allows you to move the door closer to or further away from the cabinet frame.

Tip: To ensure the door fits perfectly flush, always start by adjusting the depth first, then correct the horizontal alignment, and finally adjust the vertical position.

Common mistakes:
- Overturning a screw without checking if the other settings still fit.
- Not fully tightening the screws after adjustment – otherwise, the setting will loosen again.

Summary:
- Keep a Phillips screwdriver ready.
- Make only small incremental adjustments.
- Keep closing and checking the door repeatedly.

This usually works very well and restores the cabinet to proper condition.

I also found this to be the best approach. At first, I was very frustrated because the gaps on my Hemnes doors were quite uneven. After a few days and with a lot of patience, I was able to significantly improve the adjustment. As Julien mentioned, having the right tools is crucial, because without a good screwdriver I found it very difficult.

It also really helps to have an extra pair of hands to hold the door while you are tightening the screws. For me, working alone was much more tedious.

I know it sounds obvious, but when doing these kinds of installations you shouldn’t let yourself get stressed. Sometimes it’s better to take breaks and try again later.

For those who want it straight to the point:

- Hinge screw for left/right adjustment
- Loosen the screw on the cabinet body to adjust up/down, then tighten
- Adjust the screw for depth

Done. No secrets.

An addition to the previously very good list: Ikea Hemnes cabinets usually have concealed hinges with three-dimensional adjustment. It is especially important to note that:

- Quick and precise adjustment only works if the screws are not tightened too much before all adjustments have been made.
- You should not only align the door itself but also check whether the cabinet is level. Uneven floors will otherwise affect the door alignment.
- Especially with older Hemnes models, the threads in the wooden panel can wear out from frequent adjustments – in this case, it is recommended to use small washers or suitable nuts to improve stability.

Also very helpful: Place a spirit level against the door frame and the cabinet body to more accurately see in which direction further adjustments are needed. Vertical adjustment is usually done by loosening the attachment screw on the cabinet and slightly moving the door up or down. Then tighten firmly!

If you like, I can also provide the exact rotation angles for typical adjustment screws on these hinges, as corrections are often made in small half-turns.
