Hello everyone, I would like to start a discussion on the topic: How can IKEA Hemnes furniture, especially the series of dressers and side tables, be effectively used for building DIY desks? I am particularly interested in how the individual parts can be used flexibly in terms of stability, size, and assembly to create, for example, height-adjustable or space-saving workstations. What experiences do you have with constructing desks using Hemnes dressers as table legs or storage units? Are there any special tips for assembly or handling the materials that make the DIY process easier? I look forward to your practical advice and creative ideas!
Hey Roben64,
really interesting question! Some time ago, I built a combination using two Hemnes dressers and a large wooden tabletop. The result is sturdy and gave me an incredible amount of storage space – perfect if you want to use your desk as a shelf at the same time.
What helped me:
- Use the top surface of the dressers as a solid support for the tabletop; don’t just screw it on, but also secure it with brackets.
- The depth of the dressers fits perfectly, making the work surface nice and wide.
- If you feel like it, you can even experiment with adding casters to make the desk mobile.
A little tip: I attached small LED strips under the tabletop to create the right atmosphere for home office work in the evenings 🙂 Good luck with your project!

Roben64, using Hemnes dressers as a base for a desk is a solid solution that offers many advantages. It is especially recommended to ensure during assembly that the dressers are connected to the tabletop with suitable metal brackets to prevent lateral movement.
Additionally:
- The standardized dimensions of the Hemnes series make planning easier.
- It is especially convenient to have storage space directly within the working area.
- For ergonomic reasons, I recommend setting the height to around 73 cm to 75 cm (29 to 30 inches), possibly by using a customized tabletop or spacers.
Combining this setup with cable management solutions that can be attached to the back of the dressers could also be useful. This keeps the workspace tidy.

Hello Roben64, the Hemnes series is well suited for DIY desks because the dressers provide a sturdy base while also offering storage space. If you’re unsure about the best way to assemble it, here are some suggestions:
- Start by accurately measuring the dresser heights and your desired working height.
- Choose a tabletop that extends slightly beyond the sides of the dressers to increase the workspace and enhance stability.
- When fastening, use strong connectors such as sturdy brackets and screws that securely grip the wood.
- If you’re considering making the desk height-adjustable, you might add a simple subframe or height-adjustable feet to the tabletop or dressers.
If you plan to change the color or finish of the dressers, I recommend using high-quality paint and primer to ensure a durable appearance. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!
