Hello everyone, I am currently looking into how the Ikea Hemnes furniture series can be used more space-efficiently in living areas. The Hemnes furniture is known to be quite solid and offers a lot of storage, but it also takes up considerable space. I am particularly interested in whether there are creative solutions to use or modify items like sideboards, dressers, or beds from this range in a way that makes better use of the available living space. I am not only thinking about simply rearranging the furniture but also possible additions, conversions, or combinations with other furniture pieces or organizing systems. Does anyone have ideas, proven tips, or theoretical approaches on how to make the Hemnes series even more functional for smaller or limited spaces? Thank you in advance!

An effective way to use Ikea Hemnes furniture more space-efficiently is to take advantage of vertical space. For example, Hemnes dressers or sideboards can be combined with wall shelves to extend storage upwards without taking up additional floor area. It is also important to organize the drawers optimally, using inserts or dividers to better structure and fully utilize the available storage space. Another option is to increase multifunctionality by, for instance, using Hemnes beds with additional drawers or making use of the space under the bed for roll-out boxes. Finally, I recommend combining Hemnes furniture modularly and not just placing them in a straight line along the wall, but also considering L-shaped arrangements to make effective use of corners.

First of all, I would like to point out that the Hemnes series, due to its solid construction, can be challenging for small spaces, but here are a few targeted tips for optimization:

- Convert the back of sideboards or dressers into a functional area by installing small hook strips or magnetic strips for keys, jewelry, or kitchen utensils.
- Use self-adhesive organizers on the inside of cupboard doors to store small items or documents.
- If possible, have the legs of Hemnes dressers removed and replace them with flat casters to make the furniture more flexible and to quickly rearrange the space as needed.
- For beds in the Hemnes series, there are versions with integrated storage under the sleeping surface – custom-sized boxes or foldable containers are recommended to make the most of this space.

With all solutions, ensure that ventilation, for example under the bed, is not restricted in order to prevent moisture damage.

Of course, this is a common tip, but it is often too limited in scope. Why not consider modifying parts of the Hemnes furniture yourself? For example, cutting the tops off Hemnes cabinets to use them as half-height room dividers, or trimming shelves to create smaller modules. The furniture is sturdy enough for such adjustments, allowing for better customization to individual room layouts. Simply placing the usual pieces against the wall and hoping they fit is too rigid and not creative enough.

Exactly. Simply cutting or adding parts can be a smart solution. Combining them with other space-saving furniture also helps maximize your space. Additionally, flexible modules that can be moved or stacked are a practical approach.
