I am currently planning a DIY project with Ikea Hemnes furniture and want to modify it to make it more unique and functional. I am especially interested in proven methods and techniques to easily upgrade or completely redesign Hemnes wardrobes or drawer units. What materials, tools, or modifications do you recommend specifically for Hemnes when, for example, adjusting shelving components, creatively changing surfaces, or making the interiors more practical? I look forward to your concrete ideas and experiences on the topic “How can Ikea Hemnes be converted for a DIY project?”

Your question caught my interest because the HEMNES is often used as a standard “modular” piece, but there are limitations you shouldn’t overlook. For example, while the solid wood is sturdy, deep cuts or modifications to load-bearing parts quickly become critical in terms of stability.

I especially recommend preparatory work like surface sanding followed by staining or painting, which carries relatively low risk. For more complex modifications, you should measure very carefully and consider whether to use add-on solutions or to intervene in load-bearing components. My experience shows that you often achieve more with clever inserts, additional back panels, or replacing the door fronts than with cutting or recesses.

And one more tip: the original joints are actually optimized for regular use. If you cut through them, you should definitely reinforce them with new sturdy fasteners like wooden dowels or metal brackets. Otherwise, your furniture will quickly become unstable.

Great topic! I’m also really excited about the remodeling options for HEMNES right now! 😄 I especially like the possibility to completely redesign the surface. You can, for example, apply adhesive foil, paint it, or experiment with chalkboard paint – this way, every piece of furniture becomes unique! I also installed new handles on my drawers, which immediately gives a higher quality feel and adds a really cool touch to the old cabinet.

I totally agree! I would add that patience is key here, especially during sanding. It’s better to work in several stages to avoid an uneven surface.

Anyone interested can also experiment with decorative moldings or lighting elements. For example, I attached LED strips under a HEMNES shelf, which really adds atmosphere!

When I think about DIY modifications on HEMNES furniture, I always recommend a structured approach. Here is a brief guide with tips for beginners:

- Preparation: First, disassemble all parts to access the individual components.
- Sanding: Use fine sandpaper (grit 120 to 180) to work on the surface. Mistakes here will lead to imperfect results later.
- Repainting or staining: Always work in the direction of the wood grain and apply several thin coats.
- Replacing hardware: Measure drilling holes for new handles or knobs carefully, otherwise nothing will fit.
- Optimizing the interior: Additional drawer organizers or shelves create more order; simply cut to size and install.
- Modifications to fixed parts: Use only wood glue and wooden dowels for added stability; screws can easily split the wood.

Very important! Any irregularities will be immediately visible later. If you are new to sanding, it’s better to allow more time and occasionally wipe off dust with a soft cloth to track your progress.

Additionally, I recommend doing a test paint or stain on a small, hidden area before the final step to better assess color and durability.

From my perspective, when remodeling Ikea HEMNES furniture, it is especially important to carefully consider the load-bearing structure and material properties. Although the solid wood provides a good base, the grooves and tongue-and-groove joints are specifically designed for the standard geometries. Therefore, if you plan larger cutouts or recesses for LED lighting, the following points must be taken into account:

- Precise measurements before cutting are essential to minimize material loss and avoid compromising support functions.
- The use of reinforcing connections is crucial, for example, metal brackets or additional wooden strips along the inner edges of the cutouts to maintain rigidity.
- If doors are removed or replaced, it is advisable to upgrade to better hinges, possibly even with a soft-close feature, which can significantly increase the value of the piece.

Replacing the hardware: Measure the new handles or knobs and their drill holes carefully, otherwise nothing will fit later.

That is really critical! A misplaced hole can completely ruin the remodeling. I also recommend thoroughly cleaning all mechanical parts before replacement and lubricating them if necessary, especially the drawer slides.

In general: Remodeling should be approached with a clear plan and both decorative and structural expertise. Question for betema: How is your tool and material inventory? Are you aiming for simple surface changes or planning structural modifications as well?

For small renovations, I recommend simply installing new handles and using self-adhesive shelf dividers on the inside.

Painting works well with acrylic paints because they are flexible.

If you want to make more changes, you can replace the back panels with thin MDF boards, which can then be painted or covered with wallpaper.
