Hello everyone, I would like to start a discussion on the question: How can the Ikea Hemnes furniture range be designed and modified to adapt flexibly to changing living situations?

I am thinking of various scenarios, such as moving to smaller or larger apartments, temporary life phases like working from home, family growth, or the transition from a single-person to a couple’s household.

HEMNES offers a certain basic selection of storage and furniture elements, but how can these be used as modularly or combinably as possible to utilize space and function efficiently and avoid having to buy new items when conditions change?

What adjustment options do you know of, whether through arrangement, expansion, repurposing, or specific additions? I am also interested in how practical the handling is when living space changes dynamically – what solutions exist within the HEMNES range or through compatible add-ons?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips.

Basically, the HEMNES range is relatively flexible due to its classic modular design. It can be adapted to changing living situations through
- the modular nature of its individual components (cabinets, dressers, shelves), which can be easily expanded or reduced,
- the use of compatible accessories from the same collection, which usually have the same dimensions and styles.

Care should be taken with the structural stability and the layout of the cabinet interiors: flexible use is best where adjustable shelves or drawers are available.

For varying needs, it is recommended to
- use smaller cabinets individually,
- opt for variable combinations of dressers instead of large, fixed wall units,
- and use storage boxes from the Ikea range that fit into the HEMNES shelves.

The downside is the comparatively heavy construction, which makes frequent disassembly more difficult. Nevertheless, the furniture range remains quite adaptable when adjusting the room layout.

HEMNES can be easily expanded or reduced by adding or removing individual modules.
It can be adapted through different arrangements or by adding storage boxes or baskets.
Important: Pay attention to the ceiling height and doors.

You should primarily make sure to know the correct dimensions of the individual HEMNES units. This way, when moving to a new home, especially smaller rooms, you can arrange them differently or complement them with additional pieces.

A useful tip is to create a kind of floor plan using the HEMNES dimensions. This helps you identify early on which combinations and arrangements are truly flexible.

I also recommend choosing furniture parts that can be stacked and combined well both horizontally and vertically – this increases the variety of possible uses.

There are also practical additions like top boards, which take up less space and provide extra storage.

I would add that besides physical modularity, the material and surface quality are also important. HEMNES is durable and easy to maintain, which makes resale or passing it on easier if your living situation changes significantly.

The system can be easily combined with other Ikea collections, but you should ensure that the designs are reasonably compatible to maintain a cohesive look.

For those who like to plan systematically, it’s also worth considering combining HEMNES with elements on castors to quickly move storage between different rooms.

I agree. In particular, it makes sense to try additional storage options such as plastic boxes, fabric containers, or hanging baskets that are precisely tailored to the interior dimensions. This increases the usability of existing cabinets and can be adjusted at any time.

This is also an important economic factor: the investment retains its value better, so when moving or reorganizing, part of the furniture can be reused or sold instead of having to replace everything.
