Hello everyone,

I recently purchased several Ikea Brimnes furniture pieces, especially wardrobes and dressers, and I’m looking for a reliable way to equip them with childproof locks. The goal is to protect the furniture from unauthorized access by toddlers without significantly altering the appearance or making permanent drill holes that could damage the furniture. It is important to me that the locks are easy to operate, for example by parents, but as difficult as possible for children. Additionally, the solution should be sturdy and reliable, otherwise the locks will keep coming undone and the protective function will be lost.

Does anyone have experience or recommendations on which types of locks (e.g., clamp, magnetic, or mechanical locks) work particularly well for the Brimnes series and where it makes the most sense to install them? I look forward to concrete tips or personal experiences on how to best meet these practical requirements.

If I were you, I would use magnetic child safety locks that are installed on the inside of the doors. They are invisible from the outside, require no drilling—only adhesive—and are easy for adults to operate with the matching magnetic key. Simple and reliable.

Basically, the choice of the right locking system strongly depends on the cabinet construction and the furniture’s opening mechanisms. The BRIMNES series typically uses veneer boards with a cabinet thickness of about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) and has doors with flat edges. This somewhat limits the options.

For already assembled furniture without visible damage, I recommend magnetic child safety locks because they do not cause material loss from drilling. The lock units are mounted on the inside of the doors, and the matching magnets are attached to the furniture frame. These systems open with a magnetic key, which small children without the key can hardly manage.

Disadvantages: Installation requires some precision and clean adhesive surfaces, ideally at room temperature and after cleaning. If the doors are opened very frequently, you should choose a model with strong adhesive and possibly additional fastening (e.g., screws, if the furniture is assumed to remain permanently fixed).

Alternatively, clip-on locks could be a solution, which clamp onto the door rebate. These are easy to install and can be removed without residue. However, they are rather noticeable and could possibly be bypassed by older children.

I would rather not recommend mechanical locks (key locks), as they usually require drilling and placement on the door front.

What exactly are you planning to secure on the BRIMNES furniture? Doors, drawers, or both? This significantly influences the choice and installation of the locks.

This also aligns with my recommendation based on tested child safety systems available on the market for indoor furniture. Magnetic locks are considered particularly suitable for furniture like Ikea BRIMNES because they do not affect the furniture’s appearance, show no visible components, and thus preserve the aesthetic of the piece.

Additionally, they are very durable and provide sufficient protection against unauthorized access by young children. It is important to ensure that the surfaces are clean, grease-free, and dry when applying adhesive to guarantee long-lasting adhesion.

If the budget allows, I suggest looking for systems with TÜV-certified safety, as these meet stricter safety requirements. Besides magnetic locks, there are also flexible latch systems available, but these are usually more visible and can impact the design.

Summary:
- Magnetic locks installed inside doors and drawers
- No drilling, adhesive only
- Require a magnetic key to open
- Clean and dry surface for installation is essential

I would advise you to carefully check a few models before purchasing by reviewing the installation instructions and product reviews, then carry out a small test installation to evaluate everyday usability.
