Hello everyone,

I am currently wondering: How can Ikea Brimnes furniture be simply and effectively customized without requiring extensive DIY skills or expensive tools?

I find the BRIMNES series very practical for a tight budget, but the design is quite standardized and plain. Does anyone have experience or tips on how to visually upgrade individual pieces – for example, dressers or bed frames – possibly through painting, applying adhesive films, changing handles, or swapping fronts?

I am especially interested in solutions that are achievable with minimal effort and do not negatively affect the furniture’s durability and stability. Maybe someone also has ideas on how to specifically alter the often-criticized plastic surfaces of the BRIMNES series to make the furniture look a bit more upscale.

I look forward to your practical suggestions!

A simple and common way to upgrade Ikea BRIMNES furniture is by replacing the handles. This gives the piece a completely new character without requiring a large investment or much effort. Metal handles in vintage or industrial style, for example, create strong accents.

In addition, the surface can often be improved with special furniture foil or adhesive vinyl. However, it is important to ensure that the foils adhere well and are not too thin, so they do not look damaged after a short time.

Another tip is to use furniture paint that provides glossy or matte effects. This requires some practice, but with good instructions and the right equipment, it is definitely achievable.

It is important for all these measures to properly prepare the furniture surface beforehand: clean thoroughly, possibly sand lightly, and remove dust. This way, the new look will last longer.

Hello Narpar,

to elaborate a bit more on your question, I would like to generally introduce the different simple techniques for modifying BRIMNES furniture:

- Painting: It is recommended to use water-based paints here, as they produce less odor and are more environmentally friendly. Don’t forget the primer, otherwise the paint won’t adhere well to the smooth surface.

- Applying adhesive films: Furniture film or special decorative films can add variety. This can be done even with limited DIY skills, but it is not always very durable, especially under heavy use.

- Changing handles: As mentioned before, simple but effective. When purchasing new handles, be sure to check the dimensions of the existing drill holes to avoid the need for drilling or adjustments.

- Replacing or upgrading front panels: Some users have successfully installed custom-made fronts or applied adhesive coverings to the drawer and door fronts to soften the clean look.

The known weakness of the plastic surfaces means thorough cleaning and proper sanding is recommended before any modification steps.

If you want more detailed instructions on any of these points, I’m happy to help.

At first glance, this may seem trivial, but to me, this highlights a typical dilemma: the massive success of BRIMNES is based on its standardized simplicity. Simply changing the handles only keeps the dull mainstream alive instead of questioning it or getting truly creative.

Those who really want to transform something should take a more radical approach: the flat surfaces are perfect canvases for experimental techniques such as decoupage or even applying textures using modeling paste.

Of course, this requires courage and time, but it goes against Ikea’s trend of making all furniture disposable.

Therefore, my provocative thesis is: anyone who only superficially customizes BRIMNES misses the chance to enhance the piece sustainably and individually.
