Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to best use the Ikea Besta system as storage in the hallway. I’m not only concerned with pure functionality but also with maximizing space efficiency and design, so that it is practical yet visually appealing. Does anyone have experience with the best way to arrange the Besta to avoid overcrowding the hallway while still providing enough storage for items like shoes, coats, bags, and other everyday belongings? Are there specific combinations or additions you would recommend, or clear advice on which components to avoid? I look forward to your tips and opinions!

From a practical standpoint, a combination of the Besta system with storage boxes is suitable for the hallway to prevent dust buildup on open shelves. Limiting the depth to a maximum of 40 cm (16 inches) is technically advisable to avoid obstructing traffic flow. A modular design with drawers in the lower section increases functionality by making it easier to organize small items. Using closed doors helps create a tidy appearance. Material combinations such as matte white fronts paired with a solid wood shelf provide a homely yet low-maintenance surface.

Hallway: Besta, 40cm (16 inches) deep, with drawers at the bottom for shoes and doors at the top for jacket accessories. Shelf for keys and bag.

To really bring the hallway to life with Ikea Besta, I like to use a playful mix of open and closed elements.

That sounds nice, but isn’t the combination problematic if the hallway is small? More open compartments can make it harder to keep things tidy. I wonder if a simple, clear layout might be more effective.

That really depends on the available space. In a small hallway, it makes more sense to have closed storage to create a calm, uncluttered look. In larger hallways, open compartments can add more personality. The Besta system offers enough flexibility for both options.

Adding a mirrored panel can also be interesting, so you can quickly check yourself on the way out.

I find that very interesting, thank you! Would it be possible to combine the Besta system with mirrors – for example, having one of the fronts as a mirror? Or has anyone already seen a practical implementation of this? That would save space and greatly enhance the hallway.

Yes, that is definitely possible. Ikea actually offers a mirror door as an accessory for Besta, which can be installed instead of a regular door. This is very practical in hallways, saves space, and looks nice. It’s important to ensure the mirror is securely mounted, especially if there are children in the household. Alternatively, you can place a large mirror next to or above the system, but an integrated solution often looks more elegant.
