Hello everyone,

I want to enhance the appearance of an open shelving unit from the IKEA Besta series, primarily through the targeted use of lighting. My main question is: How can an open IKEA Besta shelving system be designed and equipped with lighting so that it is not only functional but also a real visual highlight?

I am especially interested in the choice of lighting (type, color, placement), possible decorative additions, and tips on how to showcase the shelving system better through light and design without making it look cluttered. I’m very interested in your experiences, recommendations, or ideas for custom modifications.

Looking forward to your suggestions!

For visually enhancing an open IKEA BESTA shelving unit with lighting, I recommend the following points:

- Use LED light strips or LED panels mounted directly under the shelves. These provide indirect, even illumination.
- Choose the color temperature: Warm white (~2700-3000 K) creates a cozy atmosphere, while neutral white (~4000 K) appears more modern and clear.
- The lighting should be dimmable to allow flexible brightness adjustment.
- Use either battery-powered or wired lighting systems, depending on socket availability and cable management.
- Additionally, decorative elements like glass vases or metal figurines can be used to reflect light and add visual interest to the space.

These measures enable clear structuring and visual emphasis without compromising the open design.

It’s really exciting to see what you can achieve with the BESTA combination! 😊 I think using warm LED strips behind the shelves or along the edges creates a super cool lighting effect that looks impressive. Especially when you decorate the shelves with personal items and some greenery, it feels very lively and inviting.

And honestly, the small effort involved with the lighting is definitely worth it! Just imagine how cozy it looks in the evening when the light comes on subtly. Simply fantastic!

So: grab the cables and get started – you won’t be disappointed!

That’s a very good tip! I would add that it’s important to choose LEDs with a high color rendering index (CRI > 80) to ensure the colors of decorations and shelf contents appear natural.

Also, I recommend routing the cables as discreetly as possible, for example in cable channels or along the shelf edges.

Regarding installation: Ikea BESTA shelves often have quite smooth surfaces, which makes self-adhesive LED strips a great option. For extra security, you can also use small clips or brackets.

If you want particularly flexible lighting, there are also magnetic or plug-in light strips that can be easily repositioned.

To truly enhance the IKEA BESTA open shelving unit with lighting in a high-quality way, attention should be paid not only to the lighting concept and design but also to technical details:

- The placement of the light sources should be tailored to their use, meaning shelves used to display favorite items are specially illuminated.
- When using LED strips, pay attention to the location of power outlets and cable management to avoid visible cables.
- Small spotlights or LED puck lights can also be used to create focused accents.
- Important: Avoid direct glare; LEDs should be installed indirectly or with shielding.
- For a particularly elegant look, use diffusers or frosted covers for the LED strips.

A frequently underestimated aspect is the control system: dimmable and, if possible, color-adjustable LEDs offer significantly more design flexibility.

I would be interested to know whether the furniture is placed in a room with natural daylight or in a darker area – this influences the choice of light intensity and color temperature.

Thanks for the hint! The shelving system is in my living room, which is well-lit during the day through a large window, but in the evening the room lighting is dimmed and becomes dark.

So I think a warm white light with a dimmer would be ideal to create a cozy atmosphere. However, I also want the option to switch the light to a brighter and more neutral tone when working at the shelf or looking for something.

Therefore, a combination of dimmable and possibly adjustable color temperature would be interesting, provided the technology isn’t too expensive or complicated. Does anyone have experience with such systems in connection with Ikea BESTA? Are there any recommendations for plug-and-play solutions?
