Hello everyone, I am looking for effective ways to visually update my IKEA Billy shelves to give them a more modern appearance. While the Billy shelves are practical and affordable, they often look a bit outdated and dull in the room. I am especially interested in simple methods—whether through paint, materials, lighting, or other decorative ideas—to achieve a contemporary look without having to buy entirely new furniture. What steps would you recommend, which materials have proven successful, and how can I do this relatively cost-effectively? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Mounting LED lighting along the edges – that’s the ultimate wow factor This is a popular trick, but it’s important to remember that LED strips connected directly to mains power can look untidy if cables remain visible. Heat generation and maintenance should not be underestimated either. Therefore, this approach only works well if the technical setup is carefully planned. Small cost traps can arise if planning is not done thoroughly.
If you decide to use paint, I recommend applying a primer specifically designed for plastics to ensure good adhesion. Lightly sanding the surface before painting is also helpful to achieve a durable and even finish. Regarding glass inserts: make sure the glass thickness for shelves is at least 6 mm (1/4 inch) to guarantee stability. Additionally, a matte film can reduce glare on the glass surfaces and gives a more modern appearance.

flexible solution sounds interesting. I will also experiment with matte white and possibly wood-effect film. The glass shelves look great too, especially if you want the shelving to appear a bit 'lighter.' Does anyone have a recommendation for where to buy suitable tempered glass for Billy shelves at a good price? And how difficult is it to install them yourself?
