Hello everyone,
I have some IKEA Malm furniture at home, mainly dressers and nightstands, and I would like to enhance their appearance because the standard look has become a bit plain and boring over time. I’m not looking for major modifications but rather practical and aesthetically pleasing ways to make Malm furniture appear more unique and high-quality. Maybe through surface treatments, changing the handle design, or adding small decorative elements?
What experiences have you had, and which methods work best to give typical Malm furniture more personality and style? Are there any tips that can be easily done without much effort? I look forward to your suggestions!

I’m not looking for radical renovations, but rather practical and aesthetically pleasing ways to make Malm furniture look a bit more individual and higher quality. Why not radical? Especially Malm furniture practically begs for a transformation. A little paint and changing the handles—well, thousands of others have done that too. I think if you really want to stand out, you just add new fronts.
Sure, that takes more time and money, but I’m not a fan of half measures. Can you really create a unique piece that clearly stands out from the standard with just a few simple changes? After all, these aren’t solid wood pieces, but affordable particleboard furniture. In my opinion, small changes only superficially reduce the mass-produced look.

That’s why I recommend focusing on a few well-chosen changes—such as high-quality handles, adding color accents to surfaces, or even attaching staged decorative elements that can be easily swapped out.
These methods don’t necessarily require craftsmanship skills and allow you to create a fresher atmosphere with minimal effort.
It’s also a plus that the furniture can be restored to its original state or redesigned at any time if your taste changes. This is especially helpful if you have furniture in a rental property.
